Bass Won't Bite

Featured Replies

I fish a couple retention ponds one of them has under water weeds that are dying out and  the other has no cover. Both have pretty clear water and I can see the bass swimming around the pond about 3-4 foot out from the bank and maybe 2/3 foot of water the max death of the ponds is maybe 8 to10 foot. Some time they are in groups of 4 to 15 fish but I can not get them to bite on anything. This just started getting this way as far as not biting  in the last 2 weeks  or so. DO you think it could be do to the cooler weather that we are having. I have tried plastics , spinners, jigs, cranks, rattle traps, frogs, top water baits, just can't get them to hit. There is tons of small fry's swimming all around the bank and it looks like they are guarding them.

General rule with pond bass is to keep a low profile so the bass can't see you.

The bass are not guarding small fish this time of year, they are eating them!

Tom is exactly right, stealth is essential to be able to have a chance at those Bass, in those water types... Back off the edge, make long quiet casts and that will increase you're odds considerable

Camo is my choice for bank stalking! try down sizing you plastics to match the fry.

This is common. If we could see all the fish we don't catch we'd probably hang it up.

The best answer I can give is to say that lures are not food. To fool bass, which is what you are doing, special conditions and circumstances are required. These are windows that open and close. It's a be there or be square sort of deal. This doesn't mean that you may not be able to figure something out for the particular situation you were in. That's what versatility is all about. Keep learning. With the conditions you mention, start the game with stealth (go ahead, try to sneak up on a bass -its tougher than you might think). Or wait for a dark overcast, a wind-rippled surface, or night. Things can change with a passing cloud.
