I've come across a REALLY good deal on a 500yd spool of FC. I've always bought the smallest spools and usually on a need basis, usually changing my line 2 or 3 times a season. 

 

I always figure with lines with memory issues, mono or fluoro, a big spool is just gonna sit and coil up and not be pleasant to deal with. Is this true?

A big spool usually has less memory, in my experience. I think it's typically due to the width of the spools compared to filler spools. Fluoro doesn't need to be changed each season either. It doesn't deteriorate like mono.

Some of the 1/4 pound spools are worse that the fillers because the diameter is smaller, making a tighter coiled memory.  Probably not a big deal becase the line will develop the memory of the reel spool quickly.   I don't much care for the coily stuff!

Soak the spool in a sink full of warm water for about 15 minutes. Then spool your reel. Also kvd l&l helps with the memory issues of fluoro.

doesn't the hot water trick only work with nylon lines?

Like the adage says, "Ignorance is bliss."  In my youth mono stayed on reels for several years.  My biggest ever fish was caught on 8# mono that was a few years old.

It's no secret that mono deteriorates. It has been proven in numerous tests. That doesn't mean it cannot still catch fish. Plus, if it's not in sunlight, it won't break down.
