Tennessee River: Expect A Massive Shad Kill

I was planning a trip to Pickwick this week, but that ain't going to happen.

Extreme cold, especially single digits Wednesday night will undoubtly result

in a huge kill. For the natural predators it's a buffet, but for fisherman it will be

a disaster for the next couple of weeks.

Can't let the cold stop you. There's no water I can't walk on where I live. Jerkbaits should be killing it for a while, then, eh?

Bladebait/silver buddy will shine for next few weeks

the river really needs a shad kill. last time i was there, it was loaded with them.

Since I am a tight wad or broke ass, I will wait until it ain't miserable to fish. Shad kill or not, I fish when I can enjoy it. Winter is a great time to fish the Tennessee River, but I don't enjoy ice building up in my rod guides.

Just got back from Pickwick.  Put in below the dam.  Bunch of seagulls, knew it was not gonna be great.  Not 1 bite, and the further you went down, it turned into chocolate milk.  Put boat on trailer and went across dam to state park, same scene.  Got out in the lake some and tried to find "cleaner" water with only a little luck.  No bites either.  The ice melt making the water very dirty and the remnants of a shad kill( probably mon-wed) meant we had no chance.  Water temp was 43-43.5.  Gonna need at least 2 weeks guys.

Geez...

I guess you just had to find out for yourself. Been there, done that three times.

Won't happen again...EVER!

Well I went out today. Only because a friend asked me to. It was cold, water was cold and muddy and we didn't catch a thing. I tried to talk him out of it, that's how miserable it was.

Fished pickwick out of Kayak today for about an hour. Water is chocolate milk but ended up catching one about 4 pounds.

No sign of shad kill where I was at today.

What part of Pickwick? We launched at Waterloo.

Where did you fish?  There were thousands of birds diving above and below the dam!

I fished around trace bridge area.
