Ice out is happening.

 

I can fish the edges around the ice if I wish.  The question is, is it worth doing so?

 

I would assume that the bass are moving up to where this melted water is, due to warmer temps and food at the drainage inlets.  (This is a flood control lake.)

 

Sound about right?  Go slow with jigs, twitch jerkbaits, and jig spoons and spinnerbaits?

I love fishing first ice out. Take a light action spinning rod, some 4" Senkos and wacky rig them on 6# test line. Cast up onto the edge of the ice. Let it sit there for a bit. The fish know something has landed. Then just tug it off the ice edge slowly. Let it sink. It won't go far!

Open water = fishable water. Drag a jig.

Twitch a jerk! I catch bass on minnows under the ice, they feed year around. No bass can resist a small minnow at iceout.

I fished all this week. Ice is all clear in central indiana. But the bite was slow. Caught 6 with senkos but it was painfully slow. Almost had to hit them in the head for them to bite. Tried jigs, spinners, pretty much anything. But senkos was my success. They are still pretty sluggish. But still was nice to cast and catch a few. Need a little warmer temps.
