Knots In Spool

Featured Replies

so the past two times I've been out, i have been hammered by these knots that form in my spool when im casting. I'm using 10 lb power pro on a president spinning reel
any ides?

wind knot.

Are you casting into the wind? Sometimes that thin of a braid can do exactly what you're saying.

yeah its been really windy out lately so that may the answer. Any cures?

Cast with the wind to your back.

Close the bail with your hand right as the bait is about to hit the water. Or make sure you give the line a tug after closing the bail and before your retrieve. Im fishing braid on my president too and have had no problems so far

It happens, just have to marry yourself to the fact.  A couple of tips that do help, don't cast too hard especially with lighter baits.  Like a golf swing casting is hitting the sweet spot, let the rod load and don't force it, you might be surprised how far an easy cast can travel.  Many windknots happen with that hard snap cast when the line hits the first guide.  Before you start your retrieve lift your rod to about 45 degrees and make sure the line is straight (slight tug as mentioned) without a loop.

Closing the bail by hand I find to be smoother operation, but has nothing to do with a windknot, the knot is primarily caused by the cast.

Even braid twists, enough line twist can cause windknots too, a power or ball bearing swivel may help some.
