Fuego Parts Swap

Recommended Posts

I picked up a daiwa fuego DIRT CHEAP and im waiting on it to come in the mail. Supposedly its been used only 2 times. A saltwater guy bought it and put a single power handle on it and didnt think it was strong enough for inshore and sold it to me. Since i got it so cheap, id like to add a swept handle and star, and a better spool for casting lighter stuff. Not super light because i love my spinning gear too, maybe down to 1/4oz or 3/16oz. I know the drag stars from the tdz, zillion, and steez will fit. Im wondering if anyone has tried the zaion star off the tatula r? I havent gotten the reel yet, and when i do i have the tatula to try it, im just wondering if anyone already has so i dont take them both apart if it wont work. The other question i have is if the sv1000 or any other sv spool or rcs1016 or 1012 will fit and work. Ive heard theres gaps that cause problems and you have to make custom spacers, and ive also heard there is a tiny gap that line never gets caught in. Im wondering if anyone has tried any of the sv spools in a fuego or tdz100m and if so what the results were. Im not one to sink a lot of money into reels. Usually all i do is get it professionally cleaned and relubed, put carbontex drag washers in, and maybe a set of the power septon knobs on my shimanos, so im kind of new to tuning. I have a friend with a fuego who used a 95 mm aluminum lews handle that was 30 bucks new and slapped it and a 100m spool in his fuego and i like the way it casts and retrieves better than any reel i currently own, unless of course until i get mine and put together what i have in mind lol. If anyone has also used a 100m spool, a 1016 spool, and a sv spool, which has the most controlled casting yet can still wing lures out or at least get good distance with smaller weight? Sorry about the book, im just excited bc ive always wanted a fuego and i dont want to waste money trying stuff if someone already has

I have both the tdz100m and rcs1016. The tdz100 is a good upgrade but i feel it's still too deep of a spool. the RCS 1016, for me, is a much "controlled" spool, and while not leaps and bounds better, than the tdz100, i like the performance of the 1016 better. with that said, i believe between the two, the tdz100 will fit your fuego correctly. the RCS1016 will fit, but there will be a small gap. i've read about people dealing /w the gap in zillions. i personally put one of mine in a zillion just to test it and got line into the gap. The tdz100 in a fuego, paired /w the correct rod(this is key /w all light lures), will be more than capable of casting and pitching 3/16 and 1/4oz baits. I have no experience /w the SV spools but from what i've read, many prefer these. A tdz100 spool + 4 bearing 90mm+ handle will make the reel great.

I've tricked out a couple of Fuegos and used the 100M spool but I don't believe it is being made anymore so if you can find one grab it. The SV and 1016 spools would have to have spacers and the cost would get up quickly. I think the best spool choice would be the Zillion HLC, should run about $100 and it is supposed to help with lighter weights. The Tatula handle and drag star will fit or you could grab the TD advantage handle. Tackle trap has them all. I put the Zillion type R drag star on mine and it looks good. Hedge hog studios make some drag stars that are nice and a wide range of colors and they sell the Avail handle which is really nice. Tackle trap has them also. Spool choices are limited and the only other one I know of is a MegaBass honey comb that is over $200. Try flushing and relubing your spool bearings with a light high quality lube like Alchemy or Oust and you might be happy with the original spool.

I'm wary of any magnesium based reel that was used in salt.

I never needed to hot rod my fuegos, I was quite pleased casting with the plain Jane stock spool.

I did see one, in the flea market months ago, I swear it had a Tatula drag star & handle on it..

As I remember, it's the same (stock) drag star and handle as my TDX reels were.. They are a fine reel, no doubt.

Yes, same handle and star as the X, never understood why the Sol went with the cheap handle. I guess weight was the reason

FYI the JDM TD-X is basically the same reel as the Fuego without the red finish. They are really just less refined Z's

Yep, that was mine. 5fishlimit purchased it and I believe he likes the Tat-R star on it, though I could be wrong. It certainly fit but personally I like gunmetal stars like the PX-R or Zillion-R.

Tims, 100M spool is your best option if you can find one. You may still be able to find an I'ze Factory Zillion Longcast PE spool (bass.jp had them recently), but they're out of stock most places. You probably won't come across a Zillion J-Dream spool, but if you find anyone getting rid of their Megabass IP spool you should ****** it up as it's similar to/the same as the J-Dream spool.

I actually really like the 100mm handles that TW and a few other places sell. The big EVA knobs are pretty comfortable and it's priced well at $50. A Hawgtech handle is a good option as well.

Before you get ahead of yourself, wait till the reel comes and go through it or have it gone through. This applies to any second hand reel but "only used twice" doesn't mean much if those two uses were in the salt and not rinsed etc.

The stock Fuego is a reel that really responds to a cleanup and a few minor tuning tweaks.

It did, and I'm the one that bought it! It also had the 100m spool, too.

I have five Fuegos. All have the original spool. They all will cast 3/16oz with no problem, mounted on a rod that will load properly at that weight. Unless you feel the need to go down to 1/8oz or less don't waste your money on a spool upgrade.

The hyper long cast spool is a nice upgrade for the Fuego if you're really wanting to rip and zing rattle baits. Put in a set of Hedgehog ZR bearings and you'll have a casting machine. Hedgehog also has a nice red drag star that looks sweet on the Fuego. It's 30 bucks, only a few dollars more than a Zillion type R or Zaion drag star.
