Review: Powell Max 3D

Featured Replies

Over the winter, I purchased the Powell Max 3D 723 almost as soon as they were released. Now that I have gotten to fish the rod for a month and catch some nice fish on it I think I can review it.

I have this rod paired with a Shimano Curado I 7:2:1 And 12 pound Seaguar InvizX

I mainly use this rod for casting jigs and swimming jigs over open water. For a MH it feels maybe a bit soft, but I formerly fished St. Croix rods which are pretty stout.

The rod is very sensitive. When dragging rock it has a very crisp feel, easy to detect bites. The rod balances pretty good with the Curado, about 3/4 inch in front of the locking nut. The guides are places well and haven't had any problems with the alconite guides. They are pretty small guides. No where near micro guides but a bit smaller then most. The reel seat is completely open and allows me to have 2 fingers on the blank at all times. However, the locking nut doesn't tighten down flush with the threads. (Not sure if you get what I mean)

From a looks standpoint I think its a very attractive rod. The olive green and green thread wrapping by the handle look great.

For $190 I'd suggest taking a look at the Powell Max 3D

I bought a clearance endurance 723, it does feel softer an it balances great. I was late to the Powell party but based on the purchase and your review, I may be intrigued to pick one up, especially since they are 20% off right now on BTD . com. Enjoy fishing it!

I dont think you'll be disappointed, I've never fished a Endurance but the Max 3D is supposed to be a step ahead.

I always liked the older Maxes. I'm sure the newer ones are just as good or better. Good luck with your new combo.

I've also got an Inferno and the max 3d is definitely a step ahead.
