Ive heard you can paint a blank, what would you use to put a clear coat on it? Rod finish? Clear gloss in a can??

Epoxy would be way too heavy. A urethane varnish like permagloss works but is too hot for some paints. Automotive clear coat or krylon spray clear are other options.

I have done a couple from a rattle can. Ended up stripping it back off. Even after almost a week of setting up, it was too soft to wrap. The thread just sunk into the paint.

Best bet is a body shop.

Hmmmm....when i get a new reel first thing i do is add a little bit of red to them by spray painting and then clear gloss both from a can, granted the part or whatever i paint dont bend or stretch but ive found that if you use same brand of paint and clear that it hardens up good and will not chip or flake off.. i have a gajillion old rods, guess i'll paint one of them and see how it turns out...

If the humidity is too high it will not set up and cure no matter how long you let it dry..i know this from experience on reels...like i said im gonma paint an old rod and see what results i get...wish rod blanks came in different cors, at least the ones i want...

That's funny Mike. I am at the other end of the spectrum. I could not care less about color, but that many do is good for the tackle bidness!

That's right. Color helps sell rods.  Form always follows function for me though, but if you can have both why not?

You would have to have a pretty high-end scale to be able to discern between a painted blank and the same blank stripped.  no way could you feel the difference in hand.

If you want to see what two ounces will do to a rod take a few spit shot totalling about two ounces and tape them along the length of  the rod and feel what you have.  With proper paint you're talking about almost no weight, hundredths of an ounce, I expect.  And the effect of it on the action is imperceivable to most if not all.  But do this operation wrong and a blank can easily be ruined.

We use micro guides and other techniques to shave grams of weight in pursuit of the ultimate high performance rod. Ounces are a game changer. I agree that a properly executed paint job won't hurt anything, but coat after coat of the wrong thing on the wrong blank could be counter productive. 

I spray can painted and clearex a blank with rust oleum and it turned out great, swithced colors to do another section but this time the clear raised the paint and wrinkled it, same brand on both???? I'll post a pic after work...

Surface prep? Cure time? Same model/series as well as brand? There are so many things that can go wrong with a paint job, that's why I avoid them.
