Lure Blanks Any Good?

Featured Replies

Are the lure blanks on the tackle making sites worth a try if I wanted to paint my own poppers or could someone recommend a site with good blanks to paint, the prices seem so cheap I didn't know if they were any good.

I have not tried the popper bodieas, but I expect they will work fine.  All they have to do is float and catch water when twitched.  However, the Chinese lipless crank bodies I've tried do not work well.  They don't vibrate as much as commercial ones and they tend to turn over when fished fast.  To get a custom finish on lipless cranks I'm using old commercial lipless cranks and refinishing them.

I never though of that, I'll see if I can find some old ones in bulk, thanks.

Check out predatorbassbaits.com. I've got several custom painted baits in my box painted on their blanks and they're all great.

Have you tried their lipless cranks?

Predator is one of the few sellers that actually tests lures and he has some lures designed overseas from classic baits like the original Wiggle Wart that get very good reviews.  So he's not just a mindless re-seller of Chinese knockoffs.  Whether a particular bait meets your expectations is up to you but if it doesn't, you can send it back for a refund, no problem.  You can't expect a retailer of inexpensive Asian baits to be expert about all styles of baits but Predator is better than most.  That said, no Chinese or other Asian source "knockoff" is going to be the same bait as the original bait it is based upon.  Some of them are good baits in their own right, though.

Just got some pop-xish blanks from predator baits. After losing my one real pop x i figure I might give tese a try.
