Who Makes The Best Hooks

Featured Replies

The jigs I pour are 95% Mustad, and a lot of that is price relative to Gamakatsu. I have every brand in my box, I really don't think you can buy a bad hook anymore.

That's like asking what company has the best peanut butter.

What popped into my head was.....

That's like asking which young lady is the best at this brothel...most of them are very good.

I prefer jiff by the way.

Peter Pan honey roast for me.

. This is one of my weaknesses in life and that is why there is none in the house right now.

I use Gamakatsu and Daiichi for fly tying. For bass, Owner hooks are great.

Jiff??? Peter pan????

Do yourself a favor and get some skippy. You'll never look back! Lol.

I like Owner and then Gamakatsu for soft plastics, a lot of my baits come with VMC ( Rapala, Storm & Blue Fox ) and those are also good.

  • Super User

do you buy vmc over gamakatsu?

No, I consider VMC to be good quality like Mustad at the price point, Gamakatsu and Owner are excellent quality however at a higher price point.

I used to use gammy ewg 4/0 but they were getting expensive then i found bps brand ewg hooks and they are way cheaper and i see no difference in them really. 25 for 7 bucks any body else try them?

I prefer the nickel/black.

I've used red hooks, never impressed with them

and as they scratch, they lose the red coloring.

Easy question for me. The best hooks are the ones I find on sale.

Great minds think alike.  :teeth:

I prefer Gamakatsu

I like VMC pretty well.

My last purchase of hooks were Gamakatsu, pretty happy with them.

If I had to pick one brand I'd say Eagle Claw (Trokar). I've had great luck with them, they're wicked sharp and they stay that way, and I've only rolled 1 point. That was when I got a flippin hook wedged in between rocks and was trying to break my 50 lb braid when it rolled and bent the hook out slightly. That's good enough for me.

A woman's hand. Good luck unhooking that vulcan death grip off your wallet .

This question is subjective and depends on personal preferences.With that said my favorite brands of hooks are the following;

1.Gamakatsu

2.Owner

3.Eagle Claw

4.Mustad

These brands make excellent hooks for both Saltwater and Freshwater fishing.

Gamakatsu for me.

Texas rigging a skinny worm like a 6 inch jelly worm I use the regular offset hooks of many brands. If its a little dull like the Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp I just touch it up with a diamond file and its ready to go . Fatter baits I use wider gap hooks . I like for the gap to be twice the thickness of the bait .

The problem with hooks is the same throughout the bass fishing industry: There are no standards.

So today I like the Gammies and tomorrow I go with Eagle Claws, both 2/0 worm hook sizes.

But I have no idea of the metal in the Gammies is better than that in the Eagle Claws or if the weight is the same for a 2/0 worm hook.

The type of hook also depends on the plastics you are throwing. There is a huge difference between hooks for Zoom 4-inch finesse worms and a Gary Yamamoto Flappen Hog. And there are differences between each type of hook in each category.

Not to be rude and please understand that I appreciate your question because I was in your shoes many years ago, but the best hook you can use is the one you have the most confidence for the type of bait and technique you are throwing.

And as you get older you will want a hook with a larger eye so you can tie the Palomar and other knots easier.

My more liked hooks are the following in this order:

  1. Eagle Claw
  2. Owner
  3. Gamakatsu
  4. Mustad

And lately Cobra Heavy Cover Flippin Hooks have served me very well. Excellent price at TW on them and very well built from what I have seen. But only have used them a month or two.
