Looking for advice on line

Featured Replies

I have been using yo-zuri ultra soft for about 8-10 years on my spinning reel. It's becoming difficult to find. I generally only fish in a small river. It's shallow 2-5 feet so I just wade it.  I only use one rod for all techniques. Small cranks, soft plastics, and in-line spinners. I need some recommendations on a line that is manageable and able to do most techniques well. Thanks for your input.

If you really can't find Yo-Zuri, I have found P-Line's Copolymers to do well for me while fishing for smallmouth in shallow rivers.

Never tried yo zuri but I have used mccoy copolymer on my spinning reel before and never once had a problem with it. Strong and virtually no memory. 8 lbs test is what I was using

Sufix Elite, Sunline Super Natural or Trilene XL.  I am a fan of Sufix Elite, but any of these 3 should work very well on a spinning reel.  Soft and supple with fairly low memory.  Used XL on spinning gear for many years.  Changed for the sake of change.  Wanted to try something different.  Big Game has more memory, but  also has more abrasion resistance.  A friend always used Stren.  He never complained.  No doubt there are plenty others that would work.

I've never been able to get sufix elite to spool nicely on a spinning reel, it just wants to jump off the spool.  how do you spool it?

Are you spooling it on correctly?  Elite is a nice soft line as are the other two I mentioned.  Only way to get a more manageable line on a spinning reel, AFAIK, is to spool with braid.

i spool it exactly the same as i do trilene or stren mono which i never have a problem with.  i love sufix siege on baitcasters but cannot get elite to spool nicely on my spinning reels.

I have a spinning setup that I use on what sounds to be a very similar environment.  I have a nearby stream that runs 1' to 6' deep, and it's only ~30' wide -- but, it's loaded with smallmouth, and I love to wade it upstream with spinners and small crankbaits...  A few years ago, I picked up on a whelm a spool of Silver Thread AN40 (6lb, for my ultralite application).  It's copoly and inexpensive...  However, I could not be more pleased with the line, and it's all I use now on my small stream spinning reels.  It casts nicely, holds a knot perfectly, and has never broken despite being hung and abraded on countless rocks.  And, I've had zero memory issues (although I've only used lower pound test).
