would they let me hand carry a 7 ft rod on an airplane? if not would it break if i put it in the cabin? or do they secure it etc. because im wondering if the rod tip would break.

I assume you've got it in a hard plastic tube, right?  I doubt they'd let you carry it on.  Prob north of $50 to check it.  I've traveled using three different options:

-2 piece rods in hard plastic Plano carriers

-I have mailed rods ahead

-Simply bought gear at destination and mailed it home before flying back

Too big to carry on.  I'm traveling by plane next week for a fishing trip, and have previously.  Plano rod tube, checked...is what I do.

I flew with rods once on JetBlue Airlines.  Had them packed in a telescoping bazooka tube. I checked it obviously. They inspected and didn't properly close it back up.  I ended up with a broken Lamiglas pro certified.  Luckily the rest of the rods were ok.

did they refund your money? if i got a 2 peice rod and taped them together and put a (fragile) sticker on it. would they care

Ship it to your destination UPS ahead of time

i cant im leaving in a few days and i probaly wont be able to ship back. its an arab country i dont even think they have road names

ive got a medium rod with 6lb since theres rainbow trout in rivers there and i wanna bring my medium heavy for salt water. like barracuda . just gonna be using some jerkbaits and poppers for bass on the surf and i dont think a medium crappie/trout rod with 6lb will handle that. just payed 10$ for line so i wanna bring my dads rod with me and put 40lb braid in his reel

im going to walmart, when it comes to fishing im not a lowballer but for a temporary thing i want to get a 2 peice rod i can fit in my luggage bag.  if i have to

i don't know about international.  for domestic, i've put a 2 piece rod in a 3" PVC tube with screw in end caps and that worked just fine.  i wouldn't want to be told you can't carry them on.  some are even funny about allowing the reels with line and lures to go carry on.  best to call the airline now and figure out what they'll allow.

In that range of gear, why don't you just buy it there and give it to a kid on your way to the airport coming home?

No.  Sorry.  If you fit it in you checked luggage, you should be fine. 

dont worry about it you dont need to apoligize  , if i did how ever get it outside my luggage how much would they charge. could i put a fillet knife and my leatherman in my luggage?

This is the best suggestion if you have a place to buy a rod over there.  Just pack your reels/terminal tackle/lures in your luggage.

Airlines post their policy on checking items like this. If you cannot find it you can call whichever airline you are flying. Just try to get it in writing whatever it is. 

I travel all the time with my gear ... here are some suggestions ...

1 - 3 Piece Carry On - I have 3 BassPro Extreme Rods which they let me carry on with no issues.

2 - 2 Piece rods.  I have a rod case which holds 2 2-piece rods nicely.  It's small enough that it does not incur a surcharge.

3 - Because of the additional cost for oversize stuff if I had to bring my 1 pieces I would just ship in advance

Reels go on with me.  Tackle is in my suitcase and as long as it's a small amount works just fine as carry on as well.

Between #1 and #2 I am able to get 4-5 setups with me anywhere I go.

I'd do this.  I built a custom holder out of PVC pipe and foam rubber from Home Depot.

Not too expensive to build, super secure, and around the same price to ship it as check it both ways.

I have a Diawa Ardito travel rod I brought to Florida on Jet Blue this year.  They allowed the rod as a carry on, but my tackle needed to be checked in as luggage. 

I just took Jetblue yesterday, and they allowed me to take my 2-piece rod as a carry-on item. The lenght of the rod was around 42 inches, and it fit in the overhead. I think it's fine as long as it doesn't exceed 62 inches for Jetblue.
