Dobyns Champion Applications

Featured Replies

Fellow Dobyns users, I am very satisfied with my Champion Extremes (743, 744 & 745) for jig/texas-rig applications and my crank bait rods are getting the job done for me.  My question for those who use Dobyns Champions for topwater (spooks, chug bugs, etc), spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits - what would be your recommendations?  I tend to use shorter rods for blade baits as casts are usually around docks and lay downs.  Accuracy, as opposed to distance.  Thanks.

I use both the 733 and 734 for what you listed. Chatterbaits and spinnerbaits on the 733 and spooks, buzzbaits, whopper ploppers, toads on the 734. If I had to chose one it would be the 4 power. I just like the little slower action on the 3 powers for spinners/bladed jigs but I've thrown them on the 4 powers w/o issue. The 704 is my next rod and I would recommend that for how you described you want to use it. I've never tried a 68x Dobyns but others here like them.

What ever length you decide on, the 4 power.  I'm a fan of the 734C and that's the one model I have two of.

I use a 704cb for 1/2 ounce and lighter topwater. It'll walk a super spook jr, or throw a popper very well. Sometimes I'll complain that the mod/fast action doesn't get enough snap for walking the dog, but I rarely lose a fish so it's a win.
