Southern chilly waters

Featured Replies

OK, so I need some help on cold water fishing, I've tried jigs and I haven't had much luck out of that. Are worms good right now in cold water or is it best to keep trying different methods in the water with a jig? I got a few hits on some deep diving crank baits but nothing great. I have never winter fished until this year and it has been a tough one. I need some word from the wise.

Hmmm is the water clear? What's the water temp? Worms are always a good option, some of my favorite winter baits are paddle tail shad grub, fluke on a jighead, spoon/blade bait and hair jig. Jerkbiat is also good but it helps to have clear water for that. Fish tend to suspend in winter where I fish, although they can be surprisingly shallow in flats at times and a rattle bait is the ticket

Well, it's not really clear but it's not stained real bad if you know what I mean. I heard it's best for finesse jigs. Is that true? I mostly use football or all terrain jig heads. Where I live they've been suspended and holding on deep cover. This year probably the most luck I've had was on a spinner bait or a rattletrap. I'll have to try out a jerk bait  but I've never had any luck with one.

Northwest side of a lake will warm first in winter.  Look for rip rap since the rock will hold warmth longer.  Use light weight and fish slow, plastic baits will slowly fall through the water column and give sluggish fish a better look and time to react.  Florida bass are really effected by these sudden cold fronts, much more then their northern cousins.  Good luck!

Thank y'all so much for the info that's one thing I didn't think anything about. I will definitely have to try out a plastic craw.

dont forget about those sun soaked boat ramps

Oh yeah i have had a lot of luck off of boat ramps.

Where I live there is still a lot of lilies, my friend and I went back where they were and hooked into a double digit with a Fluke but it got away.
