How to fish a mojo rig

Featured Replies

Hey everybody, just wondering how you all fish a moo rig. What weight do you use, what bait, how, where, and when do you fish it.

A mojo rig is more or less a finesse version of a Carolina rig, except the weight is fixed on the line.   Throw it like a Carolina rig, i.e. cast & drag.   Me, I haven't had decent results on any presentation where the weight is pegged way ahead of the bait  in the past - so I don't fish it very much and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

I prefer knowing where my bait is. . . so fishing a Mojo rig or a Carolina rig and knowing that the bait isn't where I'm feeling the weight messes with my head, so I don't do it.

The same way you would a Carolina rig.  It is basically a Carolina rig with an adjustable, fixed sinker.  Usually the best retrieve is simply dragging it across the bottom.  Use the lightest weight you can get away with and still stay on the bottom, often around 1/2 ounce depending on depth and current.  I usually use either a zoom centipede or a 6-7 inch lizard, but almost anything can be put on the mojo/Carolina rig.  A clean bottom is a must (aside from scattered lite cover), and it excels in deep water.

step 1. Rig your favorite bait

sep 2. Let the mojo take over

Approach depends on the water and all the usual variables, of course.  I've had good production on pressured waters in the simplest way - pegging a light weight (1/8ish) about 18 inches ahead of a 1/0 or 2/0 finesse light hook with a 4" curly tail grub.  This has produced nice smallies in clear water natural lakes and decent large mouths on muddy water reservoirs.  When the bite is tough, it's a confidence presentation for me.
