Jon Boat and Trailer refurbishment

Featured Replies

I just got a real nice deal on a 14ft Jon Boat and a Trailer, but they (especially the trailer) are a little rough.  Anybody know of a good write-up or have any other suggestions for revitalizing them?  The trailer is likely going to get a good grinding off of the surface rust followed by either paint or some version of a spray on/roll on bed liner, be it herculiner or other.  Anybody done this?

thanks for the suggestions

if i were you i would replace all wood(if any) and i would just use with a herculiner like you said

where can you find herculiner? ps i dont have cabelas or bps close by....what about ace hardware? walmart? home depot? wait wait its all clear now...advanced auto

Why coat the trailer with a bedliner product?

do yourself a favor...take the trailer in and have it sandblasted. I know it seems like spending the money is silly sometimes, but after a few long days with the grinding wheel you will thank me. LOL!!!

Sandblasting is the best way to get the trailer COMPLETELY stripped! then you can treat or cut out and repair any rust and get a good coat of primer and paint on it.

If you use the bed liner be sure not to cover any rust with it...have to get all the rust COMPLETELY removed...it will actually make it rust faster by sealing moisture against the trailer.

If you just want it to look prettier...and not do all that work...strip the rust, treat it with rust treatment, primer and paint it but do not use the bedliner on it.

OH and....

Herculiner will not stick to any product with Alcohol in it...which ALOT paints and primers do have. Also the bedliner will not stick to metal...it has to be primed at least for it to adhere. Sherwin Williams makes a good, no alcohol, metal primer that is also a rust inhibitor.

but where can you get herculiner??

Ive seen it at Wal-Mart and tons of auto parts stores.

talked to a guy at work about sandblasting and that looks like the first thing on the agenda for the trailer.  Still haven't decided about herculiner or paint, it will probably just come down to a price decision.  I'm not looking to have the prettiest trailer out there, just one that isn't quite so ghetto.   As for the boat itself, I've seen some neat things people are doing to their jons, but I think a good cleaning is the first order of business
