I'm a bank fisherman until my outboard  can get repaired. 

Moderately priced rod/ reel.

 

Scared to invest until I figure out if I like it.

Ummm....that to me sounds more like it would require a heavy duty setup instead of a medium setup....

Agree with Dobyns Fury and Shimano Cardiff 300 series reel. Mybadviceciscgo with the longer heavier action swimbait rods, FR 806 SB for example if you are considering 8" Hudds or swimbaits weighing 4 oz., under 3 oz the MH FR 795 SB works.

rod is $120, reel is $110, line about $20 = $250 very difficult to get good quality for less money.

I picked up a 7'11 MH Shimano Crucial just for the task and It does the Job!

 

 

They also have a 7'11 Heavy that will cast the heavier ones.

There is also the *** Defy Swimbait Rod at TW for $79.99 and an Abu Garcia Orra Winch 5.4:1 for $79.99 as well. I have both and use both. Definitely a good budget swimbait setup. If you want to spend a little extra on the reel, the Daiwa Lexa 300 is a good choice as well. I have tried the round reels and I prefer the low profile for palming the reel.

Hmmm.

I throw bass swimbaits, as well as large pike and musky lures on my saltwater inshore sticks. Shop the saltwater dept, much more stick for the $.
