I fished a crankbait today from shore on a very rocky bank and only took 2 casts before it got hung u and I had to go waist deep to retrieve it. I was trying to bump it off rocks, wood, etc. but it would always get hung up on something at the very end of my retrieve... I thought crankbaits aren't supposed to do that especially a lucky craft. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If your bait is wedging in the rocks , then you will have to be more careful and try to retrieve it above the rocks .Hold the rod high and pause as soon as you feel it make contact . I dont use diving cranks from bank . I do use lipless baits .

Yes , if you let them sink in the rocks .  I try to keep them above the rocks .Ideally , I go with inexpensive lures that sink , like 1/4 ounce  beetle spins ,pre-rigged swim baits , cheap spinnerbaits , jig  and grubs ... I let then settle initially then  as soon as they touch down ,i pop them off the bottom and  try to retrieve them just above the rocks . Some snags are inevitable .

Slow down the retrieve as you get closer to the bank......Add a pause and let it raise a bit too

Thanks, I was running it parallel so I'm just assuming that since the water was shallower close to shore, the bait just dove too deep and wedged into the rocks

Get a squarebill there not a deep runner ! Bang those rocks. 

 

You need to know how the crank is going to act.. you have the right idea but you're not using a shallow running crank. 

 

Try the DT fat 0-3..  if you prefer lucky craft they have a silent one on sale for like 6 bucks.

When I walked into the water I just pulled it out of some really thin weeds. Idk how I wasn't able to pull it with my rod because it was super easy with my hand.

So is the area you're fishing rocks ? Sand or weeds ? You described the bank not the water you're fishing.  You can't just aimlessly throw your squarebill and have good results. you have to figure out what is in the water and why or if a bass would be there. .once you have an idea where a bass would be lurking, you need to pick the best lure for it's environment.

 

Sparse rock with sand has many options. That squarebill could produce.

I recommend you try a "jika" rigged craw or high action plastic.

Most rocks and sand and very very few weeds that I guess I can't see 

Not sure what type and size line you are using but I have a crankbait setup rigged for just such a situation. Bank fishing with crankbaits can be tricky due to exactly what you are experiencing. My setup is using at least 15 pound mono which allows the baits to run a bit shallower and thus get hung up less. Course, as the others have said you need to keep rod up high and adjust accordingly. Unlike finesse techniques the heavier line doesn't seem to affect the fish.

Thanks. Yeah, I fished it today on 20lb braid with a copolymer leader.
