Copolymer vs. fluorocarbon for crankbaits

Featured Replies

Hmm this thread has me interested as well.

I tried switching some applications to more mono recently but I had Pike take my lure without barely even feeling the rod bend.  Its like they went through it like butter.  Meanwhile I catch (not intentionally) tons of pike on 8-10# flouro  with the lure deep sometime.  I certainly do have fluoro break on random hooksets sometimes though and it seems mono deals with the zebra muscles a bit better but I really dont want to lose more expensive lure to Pike.

How is this copolymer with Pike?

I don't want to contradict you but almost all of the diving depths of crankbaits are based off of 10# to 12# mono. There may be Japanese baits or some newer baits on the market that use fluorocarbon a

I use 10 lb yhb.  It's a strong line it sinks almost as fast as full flouro but the knot strength is waaaaay better.  Don't have time for overly complicated knots or line that burns like a Christmas t

  • Thanks for clearing that up, that's just what I've always heard and I've also heard Kevin Van Dam himself back that up. Which is why I assumed it was true

When I was real concerned about Pike, I threw Pline CXX. Tough as nails. Lots of memory, but line conditioner helps.

A little local store sells CXX in clear Blue. I tried it once but that memory was a beast..but it was tough as nails. He also sells McCoy in clear Blue..almost no memory but didn't hold up in brush...and after a few break offs. I went back to Stren, kind of a middle of the road line that is still my #1. That was several years back.

Paul Elias, Mark Davis, & David Fritts all use 12# mono & 5.1:1 gear ratio!

Just saying ;)

Just read an interesting article on Paul Elias, claims he uses 12lb FC in open water and braid in heavy cover and grass. The article is on the site here, it is about his record setting tournament.

You need a short wire leader like Seglon micro 7/7 to prevent sharp toothy fish biting through.

FC, copolymer and Nylon monofilaments are all the same regarding cut resistance. Abrasion resistance and impact strength differ between line types.

I caught a 37 lb musky using 8 lb Maxima Ultra Green copolymer using a 1/4 oz hair jig fishing for smallmouth. Also had pike bite off a Suick using 25 lb Big Game. Just depends on sharp teeth hitting the line instead of the hooks.

YZHB for quite a few years now. Giving FC a shot but could be going back. Anyone use P-Line Flouroclear?

Picked up a spool of Yo-Zuri Top Knot today. Was going to get Hybrid but they didnt have it in the lb test i wanted and on a whim got the full fluoro. Got some KVD Line and Lure conditioner I'm going to use when i spool it up to help with memory. If I hate it I can throw some Grand Slam copoly I have on it or get some Hybrid.

I tried it. Worst line I’ve ever used. Lost three nice bass due to line breakage at the knot (no other line ever did that to me before). Horrible performance.

Supple, manageable, casts great, strong as hell and abrasion resistant. Breaking at knot? Hmmmm.....

As always everything is subjective and what works for one might not work for all. Good luck!

Correct, Paul uses FC and braid just like you said.  In addition Mark Davis uses FC for most of his cranking now, as stated in this recent article: https://www.bassresource.com/fishing/line-choices-mark-davis.html

Yes, I tried it for a year. The abrasion resistance just wasn't to my liking. I found I was retying way more than I should.

I solved that when I switched to InvizX for fishing cover, and Tatsu for open water.

Yep ^^

I’d gladly take my chances with Berkley Vanish before I’d ever try fluoroclear again, if that tells you anything ? Exact same issue as MDTX - 2 different spools of 2 different pound tests. Do a search on the site and you’ll see it’s a love-hate thing.
