Cabelas boat showroom

Recommended Posts

Stopped in today. They've cleared all but one Alumacraft, and every Lowe off the showroom floor to make room for Nitro and Tracker. There were 3 Rangers, 3 Nitros, 2 Trackers, 1 Alumacraft and 2 glass offshore boats on the floor. Wonder if the plan is to push out the competition completely

That wouldn’t make sense. Each MFG fills a consumer’s targeted need. Now that BPS owns Cabelas, it has more market share.

I worked for Alpine Electronics for a long time.  They have the best sound quality and are the easiest to use. Kenwood has the best feature/price ratio and are as reliable as a door knob.  Pioneer falls in between.  Say Alpine bought Kenwood or Pioneer, now they take more of the market and don’t have to change much of anything.

Cabelas/BPS/JohnnyMonopoly will turn more profit selling Ranger and Tracker/Nitro than Alumacraft and Lowe

I heard it depended on the individual markets. It is very likely that inventory will vary greatly from store to store

They had inventory outside. Johnny's brands were on the showroom floor

It's hard to say.  I don't own a boat and can't tell you the differences between brands.  If boat owners are like car stereo geeks, I'd bet the first round of drinks that one company owning four brands will do better than just two, using the entire US as their market.

Best of luck to them however many brands they might market.

Nitro/Tracker started popping up at my local Cabelas as well. They still have a handful of Alumacrafts and Rangers. But in my area the Aluminum sell 3x times more than glass boats. Another thing I noticed is my Cabelas is discontinuing their house brand rods, reels and soft plastic. Was told there are "new gens" coming out at the beginning of the year. I assume that means BPS will start to use there manufactures and not Daiwa like Cabelas.

Sure they will.  But if they don't offer Alumacraft and Lowe...they make zero on those brands...and plenty of people are still going to seek them out and buy them.

They can't possibly be arrogant, or stupid enough to believe anyone is going to forsake an Alumacraft  for a Tracker...unless they are half daft...

I'm a no math wizard, but I'd rather make 5% of something than 20% of nothing...

Could be a good time to make deals for Alumacraft and Lowe boats at Cabela's!

I can't see why Calela's would continue to carry a competing brand to BSP boats.

The Gonzalez Louisiana store has neither Nitro or Tracker, that said BPS in Denham Springs Louisiana is 40 minutes away.

It will cost Cabelas more to inventory Alumacraft and Lowe than Ranger and Nitro. One Lowe or Alumacraft on the floor for sale is one less Ranger or Nitro they can sell at a higher margin. I don't think arrogance or stupidity have anything to do with the decision(s) It's all dollars and cents. If someone has their heart set on an Alumacraft, they're going to buy Alumacraft. There will just be one less dealer in the mix

That's exactly what I'm saying...doesn't matter if it costs more, it's lost margin if the the other guy sells it.

I'd rather have 5% (or 2%, or whatever) than 20% of nothing...

...the buyer that goes elsewhere to get that Alumacraft is most likely going to go back there for service and accessories.  That's when it really starts to hurt...

Mostly because anyone who has looked hard at Alumacraft and Tracker and decided Alumacraft is a better boat isn't going to buy the Tracker just because Cabela's is selling it.

The risk of letting go of the other brands is pretty high...let it go and they loose all profit opportunity on those brands...that'd be silly in my book, but I'm not a boat business whiz, I just make 2 - 3 x commodity margins on corrugated...I'd be surprised to see them make a business decision like that.

Heard from our Lowe's district rep (?) about this.  Lowe will no longer be carried by Cabelas.  They will be able to order parts and file warranty claims for 90 days but after that nada.  They can no longer order new Lowe boats.  Heard about this last year from a second Lowe dealer but was hoping it wouldn't come about (I have a Lowe).

BTW, our local Cabelas will not be carrying Tracker as there is a BPS only 18 miles away and a separate Tracker dealer in between.
