Hey guys,

I just got an Abu Garcia vendetta. 7'3 MHF rod and plan on using it for frogging, pitching, flipping, jigs and worms. In your opinion can I use a 6:6:1 reel for these purposes or should I go to a faster gear ratio?

I have a 7:3 on mine but don't see why you wouldn't be able to use yours.

 

Ok thanks I'm getting my first bait caster this year and just wanted to make sure I get the right one for what I'm looking to do.

I doubt anyone could even feel the effects of a .4 gear ratio difference, it amounts to less than 2" per handle turn. So your reel will be fine.

Ok so just to clarify a 6:6:1 is fast enough for frogging and flipping? It's the main reason I got the rod I did. Thanks for responding.

It will work, but if I was buying a new reel for those techniques I'd get a faster reel.

The reel will be just fine.  My personal choice though for those techniques would faster. 

6:1 ratio Will work fine! I use to fish everything on a 6:1 it’s a good in the middle reel.

for those techniques id get 7:1 or faster.

The reason most of us run a reel faster than 6X-1 for flipping, pitching and frogging is to retrieve the line quickly if a fish blows up and misses your bait. In flipping and pitching your strike zone is small so you want to cast it into the structure hop it a few times, retrieve it and refire it back in to hit your next target.  I use a lot of 6.3 or 6.4, reels but they are to fish moving baits like small to mid sized crankbaits, rattle traps and most of my plastic worms or jigs .  For frogs and pitching I like an 8-1 reel.  In your case if you intend to fish all those baits with that one rod I would compromise and go with a 7-1 or 7.3-1 personally.

 

Work just fine?  Yes.  Would faster be better?  Yes.

 

As said, I wouldn't buy a new reel as the one u have will do just fine. If...like a lot of us...u are looking for a reason to buy another combo then buy a faster reel for that rod and another rod for the slower reel. Good luck 

If you haven’t bought yet, I’d say go faster, you can always reel slower. 

I would step up to a 7 something gear ratio for those techniques. A 6 would work, but a faster reel will work even better. I wouldn't even rule out an 8:1 gear ratio. I use my 8.1:1 Tat SV for flipping and frogging and it's freakin sweet.

Like others said, if you have a 6.x:1 and the reel is otherwise fine, I would use it. But should you say buy a new moving bait rod in the future, you might want to use that reel with that rod and add a 7.1:1 or 8.1:1 reel instead. I wouldn't go out and buy a new reel if you already bought it.
