fishing after major storm/during cold front

Recommended Posts

in ponds, what would be the best way to go about catching fish when the temps go from 70's to 50's? yesterday we had major thunderstorms and a tornado in my city, I know to slow down, but what lures would you guys suggest?

Ned rig, weightless senkos, maybe a jerkbait. Fish real slow and keep the bait tight to cover.

Yeah, I've added the Ned rig to my finesse arsenal (sliders, drop shot, etc.). Our temps dropped about 20 degress yesterday afternoon as the front passed. I went out to a local pond and caught about 30 in 2 hours on the Ned after the front. Mostly small ones and its a private pond, but it was still a lot of fun.

The Ned is a catcher for sure. I like the big TRD’s, I use them in the creek for smallies a lot and noticed a definite size increase when I switched to the big ones.

Good suggestions on what to throw, but where to throw 'em is even more important.  A bass is going to seek out areas where they feel secure and their strike window will be reduced to inches, so presentations must be spot on.

Two areas to focus on are depth and cover.  Cover may be obvious, but if it doesn't offer a quick escape to deeper water, it may not hold fish. Newly flooded brush is a prime location after heavy rain. Depth is relative to the body of water and the presence of bottom structure will determine whether it's an option for the fish. A slow tapering, bowl shaped pond doesn't offer much in the way of security, so target whatever cover is available even if it's only at the shoreline. One formed by a dam does and the creek bed  drop-off is a prime example of deep security.

Wait for the weather to return to warm stable conditions, your pond has gone through a sever water temperature drop from high winds.
