what unpopular lure do you use?

Recommended Posts

Rapala Crankin Raps, the 3 and 5 size squarebills. I think they discontinued them a couple years ago but Ive caught thousands of bass on them through the years. They are my favorite crankbait for shallow water.

They're kind of similar, but a little different, much wider body. They get bit though.

No automatic alt text available.

Shhhhhhhhhhh...

Best night time calm water lure period.

I have some of the wee r and deep wee r baits. I took them out of my tackle box so I didn't end up losing them since you can't find them anymore.

This should read some of the original ones before Rebel was bought out.

Walking baits. I don't see many people throwing those, but then again, I don't see many people fishing at the ponds I fish, so... ;)

Cotton Cordell Ripplin Red Fin.

I have these just because Jimmy Houston use to wreck fish on his show using them when I was young. Now they work great but for walleye not bass.

Fat IKA...nobody we fish with uses these despite all the success we've had with them over the past ten years or so. Older son just won a small local tourney using it. Thanks again RoadWarrior for the tip.

@fishwizzard

First - I change the hooks out to a quality after market model - Mustad, Gamaktsu or Owner.  I like no feather here too.

As for the secret -  Perhaps think of the Subwalk as a 'Suspending Fluke with two trebles' and fish it that way.

One way I fish it, is like a jerkbait but in warmer water situations where I might normally fish topwater.  Fish still need to come 'up' to get it, just not 'all the way up'. Works as a 'follow-up' to a missed topwater strike now & then too.  Of course you have to have it rigged & ready.

I almost always use spinning gear (10 braid & a 10 lb mono leader - about 10 ft).  Great to bomb casts and get the bait as far from the boat as I can - especially in this clear water.  In colder water Sub mid 50's, I let the bait pause more.  It has a great 'roll to a stop' action that I believe generates quite a few strikes.

In plus mid 50 temps I fish this bait pretty fast.  Still like a jerk bait but 'the pause' is like a millisecond.   Short Jerk, reel up slack,  -  short jerk, reel up slack - but pretty fast.  Pretty much constant reeling and jerking.  I watch smallies appear behind the bait & track it for a ways the then Smash it.  Trick is if you see one (or several) don't stop the bait, they love the chase & will lose interest if the bait doesn't keep moving - speeding it up can be a trigger too.

Once shallow weeds emerge I'll throw & fish this over them - the magic is the the long cast and the fast retrieve.  I will also add I've caught (and lost a few) to some hefty pike too.

Confidence in a bait is a big deal and if you think this is a dud - well that's not going to help you BUT I get it.  I can't catch a cold on a Glide bait and I have a box of them - everyone else is all about them.  Me - well, not so much.

Hope this helps.

That helps a lot!  I was trying to work them way too slow it seems like.  I work my flukes pretty fast, so that compairson really helped.

Thanks!
