Porta-Bote Considerations

Featured Replies

I am looking into purchasing a Porta-Bote.  I do not currently own a truck or SUV.  Can anyone tell me if it is feasible to transport the Porta-Bote on the roof of a sedan?  If so, do you have any recommendations for a non-permanent rooftop rack?  Also, if you know of any reasons that I may be disappointed in the Porta -Bote, feel free to let me know that as well.  Thanks in advance.  (I currently have a Sea Eagle 9 but want to upgrade to something a little more comfortable and stable although I have enjoyed my Sea Eagle.)

Also, if I end up buying the Porta-Bote, I am faced with whether I want to buy a motor for it or stick with my current trolling motor for significantly reduced performance.  I want the motor, but what are some things to consider that I may not have thought about yet.  I'm looking at the Suzuki 4 or 5 HP, Nissan 4/5 HP or the Briggs Stratton 5HP.  Any recommendations?

Thanks again.

I don't know how much the porta-bote weighs so I don't know how well this will work, but their are foam blocks you can buy for kayaks and canoes.  They have a nonskid side that keeps them from sliding on the roof.  You can look into something like that, you would need more blocks then a canoe would but you can get a idea.  Then if you strap it to the bumper, across the middle (hook straps under car), and strap the front to the front of the car.  I would use ratchet straps, just make use if a racket is touching your car to out a sponge or something to keep it from scratching.

The Porta-Bote weights between 55-70 pounds depending on the model.  Thanks for the info.  I'll look into the roof rack type you are talking about.

KB, I looked into the "Porta-Bote" back in '06. I wanted something fish when traveling in Motorhome. After much deliberation, ordered a SeaEagle Folcat 375fc. Have never looked back, extremely pleased. You might want to look at one.

Good luck in your Quest.
