14'  V-Hull  stability?

Featured Replies

I have a friend that is wanting to put a deck on his 14' v-hull.  It has a small outboard on the back and he is also wanting to put a foot controlled trolling motor on the front.  Should there be any stability concerns doing so?  It sounds like he is going to be putting the deck right ontop of the bench seats.  Thanks

Won't be as stable as a jon but should be fine.  Trick here is keeping the center of gravity low.  I wouldn't deck any higher than the bench.

Bench high should be fine, wouldn't go any higher.  I actually prefer v-hull over jons due to the extra engine and weight capacities.  (Personal preference)  Good luck, always a fun project.

I have a 1956 14' Alumacraft Vee with a Johnson 9.9 that I got from my Uncle. I moved the middle bench seat towards the rear one.  I did this because I didn't want to sacrifice hull integrity and to give myself a little more room in the middle of the boat.  I then decked the front and over both rear benches leaving the middle open.  I made a hatch in the front for storage underneath.  I used 7" pedestals with low rise seats.  The boat feels more solid than before.  I fish mainly strip mines and lazy rivers and have not had any stability issues with it.  It could be that my brother helped me mod it and he is the only one who has fished out of it since, so he knows how to handle it.  I would show a pic but it is buried under a cover and 10" of snow now. :-[

I've got a 14' v-hull that I bought decking in it and have no probems with it at all.  The decking at the front from the front seat forwars is at seat height.  Mid-section has a deck about 4" lower than center bench seat fore and aft of that seat.   Original aluminum bench seats have been toped with wood.  Two swivel fishing seats added (one on front deck, one on rear bench.

This is a tiller steer with an Evinrude 15 HP.  Very stable even in the relatively few times i've had it on rough water.  I am very comfortable standing, casting, and walking in it and I'm a big guy (6' 1", 250 lbs).

Looking at re-decking and carpeting mine this spring to create some better below deck storage, relocate the batteries more forward and re-wire the boat.

WV Eagle got any pictures you could post ?  I am doing a similiar decking project in the next few weeks on a 14V.

My first post here on this site. Just wanted to say about 10 years ago I had a 14 foot aluminum deep V-hull with a 5 foot beam, had a 15 HP Mercury on it. I had a deck on the front from the bow back to about 5 or 6 inches passed the first bench seat with the underneath section used for storage. It was very stable to stand on, I'm 6'1 and about 275 lbs. and I was back then too. I fished it for about 3 years before I sold it. It had a Minn Kota Autopilot 36 lb. thrust trolling motor on it, foot controlled. I operated it from a standing position. I was comfortable to walk all over that boat from end to end, many times stepping from bench seat to seat to deck, never touching the floor between. And I know this wasn't the best idea but I occasionally had as many as 4 people in it fishing. Mostly just 2 or 3 but even with 4 it was stable.

Only thing I ever had a problem with was when I put a seat on an 11" pedestal right in the middle of the deck, I found out to get on the deck I had to step near the sides and it made the boat roll a little more than I liked, so I removed the seat and left the deck wide open instead.

You really cant stand on the front deck but the other deck(The sunk in part) in back and the one in the front of the front seat you can. Its a little shacky but not bad.
