22 Aug 2018 ~ Post Frontal Summer Smallies and a Surprise (video)

Recommended Posts

Got out on a local lake today for a half day/morning trip.  We finally did get the rain that was forecast overnight.  After it went through, cooler temps & a stiff NW winds followed it up and continued into this morning.  My expectations were high – big fan of the wind.   Started out on a shallow mid-lake flat I’d seen bait on last time I was here (week or so ago).  Unfortunately it produced nothing.  No bass and I didn’t see any bait.   I moved down a couple of miles to a long point.

Immediate results; several fun size smallmouth on a rage bug / swing head deal and a surprise Musky on a small swimbait.

This lake had a big population of tiger musky several years ago but when the DNR stopped stocking them they eventually disappeared.  A few years back DNR started re-stocking.  Looks like it’s working.  Next several years might be interesting. Hope they don’t eat all the smallies.

Glad to see you had a great day of fishing at a local lake. Not to mention a place for healthy muskies! 😎

Thanks Lonnie, I really appreciate the support.

I'll take whatever I can get but I'd agree with you.

My average smallmouth recently has been good.

And I like the cool(er) temps.

Very refreshing - not a fan of sweating while I'm fishing.

Doesn't happen much, well - except in Mexico.

But that's only for a week and the rewards are often fairly epic !

(58 more days)

Good Morning @mattkenzer ~ and you're welcome.

Cricket presentation as follows;

Long cast.

On the bottom.

Two reel handle turns - pause 1 second when warm water. 2 Seconds in cool water. 3 seconds in cold water.

Repeat until arm gets broke.

Pretty much right here . . .

Thanks again @A-Jay

Just to clarify, when you say cricket, you are referring to the Rage Bug?

I have already stolen your Orange Head and Chartreuse Tips on the Bug ..... "It is in the details!"

A-jay where did you get the fish mat? Every one of your vids I think "what a great idea!" But I always forget to ask after seeing the fish that go on it!

I'm chasing smallies again this Sunday. Hoping to bag a couple decent ones this time. I picked up a pack of those swing head jigs last year and fell in love with them for fishing  cover. Recently I've started rigging them with keitechs and other swim baits and so far the results have been very good.
