The way that knot works passing through the guides doesn’t affect it. Plus it will get no more abuse in a #4 than a #6

FG knot, like every knot, has a front end and a backend, the front end where it transitions onto the leader is smaller then most knots however the backend is larger with a tag end. Even anyone casts there line it goes out through the guides at high speed and when retreived it comes back through the guides at slower speed, the rod is bent is both situations and any knot contact the inside of the guide ring, regardless of it's inside diameter creating friction. Micro guide inside diameter can be about 3X the knot diameter vs 10X the inside diameter or a standard guide ringed a casting rod.

You can feel the knot bouncing through the guides.

I have the 7’4” heavy avid x and have never had a problem with the leader getting caught. I was throwing 50 pound braid with a 16# flouro leader. Use the Albright knot and not a uni to uni

Wow okay that's even heavier than I was planning on using. Hmmmm I think I'm going to just try it; if it works out, great. If it doesn't, I think I'll have enough rods to cover what it can't do. Thanks!

Why not just go with a standard avid instead of the x?

I haven't heard great things about it, and people say the difference between the Avid and Avid X is extremely noticeable. I have heard it is extremely unbalanced too. Plus I have held the Avid X and it feels... I don't know it just feels right. It was extremely comfortable and balanced. 

I have more than 20 Avids.  If someone thinks they're unbalanced, they're holding the rod wrong, lol.  The only difference is better guides and full cork grip.  Sensitivity is the same.  Both lines use the same blanks.

I agree.  I tried a buddys avidx, and i will stick with my standard avids. Not a fan of micro eyes. 

I own a 7’MF avidx- I use it quite a bit for lighter duty applications with straight 10lb fluoro on a curado 70 - pretty good deal.  There’s a reason I only own one avidx model out of all of my St Croixs, and that’s because 50lb braid to a 12lb+ leader would rub through the guides every cast with anything other than an FG knot.  Never would get hung up or anything just make a noise and obviously degrade the knots strength pretty quickly.

 

I throw braid with a fluoro leader fairly often and prefer “regular” guides on my rods instead of micros for this reason.  Some of the higher end St. Croixs come with guides that are getting close to “micro” sized but they seem to be a very nice in-between size.  Best of both worlds.
