Bought the trail kit for this to try and blacken those stainless steel chatterbait blades from China. Hopefully this works and I don't die in some chemical accident this weekend. All my other efforts have failed but I am on a mission to make some good black ones.

That is my backup plan but Phenix has to be coating these some way and I am trying to figure out how.

I'll send you a couple powder painted ones if you want to see if they're something you could use. 

I powder paint my blades as well. Works for me.

What exact metal are the blades?  My wife does a lot of pickeling/staining of metal for her job, she said if I know the exact metal she might be albe to suggest other options.

The blades I buy are stainless steel.

That is what I told her but she wanted to know what kind of stainelss. I assume most lure component companies are not going to get that specific but I thought I would ask just in case. 

 

She mostly works at brass and copper which are apparently much easier to get to take a pickle but has some colleagues who might have more experence with coloring stainless steel. 

All I know is they are stainless steel and from China so who knows. The kit above is for stainless steel and you just dilute the blackening solution based on steel type. I will just use some trial and error this weekend to find out.

 

As far as powder painting the blades I get too much powder on them every time and they look like crap.

The stainless is going to be 300 or 400 series. I doubt it will be 300, as we use that for salt water conditions at work and it is more expensive that 400 series S.S. There is no way of finding out from the seller, because they probably don't know. You would have to go to the manufacturer, and the seller isn't going to tell you where hew gets them from.

   How about black tape? You can trim off the profile with a single edge razor blade.

This is the product she came back with. She said it works very good on non-stainless steel and she think she remembers using it on stainless a couple years ago and it working out “OK”.  She said the Jax chemicals are very easy to use and are not too terribly toxic smelling  

The kit arrived yesterday so I will try it out this weekend.

Allen, I apologize if this was asked before but I didn't see it if it was. What about the black nickel shake blades from Barlow's Tackle? I don't know who does the black nickel willow leaf blades for them but they are really nice, I'd imagine the chatterbait blades would be just as nice.
