I'm unsure about the years, but the answer I was thinking is they all liked and preferred spinning tackle. Bobby used both, but the rest used spinning tackle almost exclusively.

Ah, yep. In that regard, Tom Mann was sort of the outlier. The other three all came from highland type lake backgrounds where finesse and light line fishing was very common, even developed. Tom being in Alabama where big line for big fish was the norm was sort of an outlier by preferring to fish his baits on an oversized spinning outfit, including his big Jelly worms. Good stuff

Mike, your correct too. At least 3 were lure designers and endorsers

Yes. Catt filled me in on Roger Moore in another thread. He fished 4yrs straight in early B.A.S.S. events and never once got skunked! Using mithcell 308/309 reels, which would have been considered a trout panfish reel at the time. Good fisherman- all of them. They fished the tackle that worked best for them, not giving a hoot what others thought. Fishing finesse, before finesse was cool.

The problem is that now we all know real bass fisherman use casting gear.  There was no internet back then to let them know they had it all wrong.  Thank god for technology!
