Fluke that shimmies as it falls

Featured Replies

Does anyone know of a fluke/hook combo that consistently falls horizontal and shimmies as it falls?

I have a fluke I made out of a swimbait which sometimes does on a VMC drop dead hook but other times does not. I’m looking for something that will give me that action consistently.

The Yamamoto D-Shad is basicly a fluke-shaped Senko.  It’s a little more durable then a Senko but far more fragile then a Zoom Super.

Zoom fluke on a 5/0 offset worm hook works for me.

Not sure it’s the shimmy you’re looking for, but a 5 inch Caffeine Shad (the fluke style, not swimming paddle tail) on an Owner 4/0 Twistlock Light 3/32 oz has its own movement. This particular fluke has a small air bubble in the tip of the tail - on the fall it shimmies some horizontally since its belly-weighted, sinks about a foot, then turns, wiggles the tail and sinks/swims again on its own in a different direction.  Much more natural movement than a standard style fluke.

Deadly, but again don’t know if that’s the shimmy movement you’re looking for.

Yum houdini shads do it if you pop out the diamond tale, D shads also do it as do Zoom.  I rig all mine with 4/0 wide gap offset hooks.  I also stretch mine before rigging, not sure why i started doing it, but it seems to move some of the salt around or something because it changes the falling action.

OSP do alive jerkbaits have a senko shimmy on the fall with an unweighted hook.

Try a 6" sluggo on a 5/0 hook weightless .

Caffeine Shad should do the trick

Hmmm,  Yamamoto D-Shad, Zoom Fluke, Strike King Caffeine Shad, Yum Houdini Shad, OSP Alive Jerkbait, and a 6" Slugo.

Rig it sideways. Works for me

For sure the Yamamoto D-Shad. It was actually @TOXIC who recommended this bait to me on one of my previous threads.

I've been really impressed with this bait. You can work it exactly like a senko where the initial fall will produce a lot strikes and then continue to work it back by sweeping up your rod and let it fall again on semi slack line. You can also work it like a hard jerk bait by popping the slack. The plastic is heavy enough that you can fish it without a weighted hook.

The tail shimmies quite a bit. I'd say it's slightly more pronounced than the senko. It has a bit more higher frequency then a senko's wobble.

I think this bait goes under the radar and is very underrated. It's essentially a fluke shaped senko. Looks super realistic and a really high quality bait.

There was a sale at Cabela’s not long ago for these baits. They were selling it for $2.88 a pack, so I bought like $50 bucks worth of them.

I never get in the boat without a DShad rigged up but I don't respond to every post on this site because I don't want to sound like a broken record.  A little tip I used to do to give the DShad a different look...I would take my line cutters and cut the center section of the tail out giving the tail a "Y" look.  It gives it a little more action if I am going to be dead sticking it a lot.  I also put a "How to" post up a while back on rigging a DShad to get it to dart left, right, up or down.  It's a much more versatile bait than many realize.

*It's called a Strike King Red Eye Shad - best shimmy on the drop / fall going ... All kidding aside , I don't think Flukes are especially known for any shimmy qualities - for soft baits a Yamamoto Senko rigged wacky style is about as good as it gets for shimmy on the drop / fall .

I don't know what this means.  Do you mean stays horizontally oriented (does not dive nose-first) as it falls?  any hook that doesn't have a forward weight should do this with any of the major fluke-style baits. No?

This is not the same profile, but has the action you are looking for.

This isn't exactly an answer to the question but I think nose hooking flukes with an octopus hook is overlooked for the added action it allows.

Another vote for the Caffeine Shad. Only fluke I've fished that shimmies on the fall. I'm pretty sure it's the flat underside of the tail.

That's basically a homemade Banjo Minnow. Fantastic action and a subpar hookup rate as compared to a weightless Texas Rig.
