The "why" of Senkos

Recommended Posts

I think I’ve read somewhere it has to do with the size of the salt in the Senko. Most companies use a larger grain of salt and Yamamoto uses a very fine grain of salt like popcorn salt.

Hain sea salt is fine and dissolves easily, I use for pork rind brine. Senko's have heavy salt content so they sink and one reason they tend to tear. If you use salt water plastisol for toughness the fish catching action suffers.

Action, salt and fall rate is my theory.

Rigged weightless on 3/0 wide gap hook they have a shimmy on the fall that mimics something alive. Same when wacky rigged.

The salt helps the drop rate and masks the plastic taste so when they bite they don't spit it out right away.

A magical bait for sure.

*Also tickles a bass's lateral lines just right - then there is that visual ,  great taste and mouth feel  once they commit ... A dab of Megastrike  lightly rubbed in from head to tail seals the deal !

I think there are a bunch of factors in why they produce so well........ Salt, fall rate, they wiggle differently, maybe overall quality.  But IMHO, the thing that makes them hard to stomach sometime is also the thing that makes them great and that is how soft they are.  With a 4/0 EWG, this bait is usually a one fish and done piece of soft plastic but I think the softness also allows the hook to sink in better/faster.

It's a "do nothing" bait that does nothing EXCEPT catch fish.

I don't know if I'd read much into Roland swearing by anything, he put his face on the Helicopter Lure afterall.

A Senko looks alive and easy to catch, I think that's the simplest reason why fish eat them again and again. They're also easy to fish so a lot of people fish them successfully.

To be fair, I caught some good bass after saving up my allowance money to buy the helicopter lure kit as a kid. I still remember one strike in particular where the bass came shooting out from under a dock and just smoked it. I caught more on the helicopter lure than I ever have on Doug Harmon's snake lures. 😂
