Do any of you use baitcasters for T.R.D neds?

Recommended Posts

I used to use a spinning rod for my ned rigs but I want to try them again so I'm trying to use one on my SLX reel tomorrow. Does anybody else fish these on a casting reel?

I just picked up some 8 lb. p-line floroclear for it. Never used copolymer before but so far it handles really well.

I have my spool tension knob set super loose and mostly roll cast with it.

Yes, they skip very easily with bc reels too. I use 10 pound braid and mostly 1/20oz jighead.

What type 1/20oz jig head? I wanted to try swimZ and TRD on 1/20oz but I only got ball jig head in 1gram and 1.5 grams.

I didn't like Floroclear.  10# broke way too easy.  Some others on here have also mentioned having problems with it.  I can highly recommend AN40.

I have 1 bc setup for Ned rig fishing.  It is a Shimano Curado 70 loaded with 6 # fluorocarbon line mounted on a Gloomis Bronzeback 6'9" ml rod.  I make my own heads and use 3/32 oz and heavier heads on it.

I use a Pixy 68 on a Kistler ML/F and it nearly spools out every time.

Does the scorpion have cent. brakes? I was getting 25yd.~ casts today with a 1/16th head. Caught a solid 3.5er after not catching anything in weeks so that was good too. The ned really does work that well I guess.

It can be done easy enough but Why?

My old ned spinning reel isn't in working order anymore. 😄

It worked out really well for me today. It was as sensitive as any flourocarbon I've used, I think. 8# test held up for pulling a good sized one out of cover so it's strong enough for me.

Have you ever tried lighter heads? It seems the lighter the head the more you catch.

I use 1/10 and 1/20 heads on casting gear.  I use 3 inches of a Huka Stick over a TRD though but they basically weigh the same.  I sometimes fish the long shank 1/10 head and a full Hula Stick.

I use the rod in back for 90% of my Neds with 1/10 oz heads.  It's a Daiwa Pixy with 20# Suffix high vis braid on a Majorcraft Volkey 68L BFS.

Well the one spinning rod combo I had I accidentally kicked into lake Geist a few weeks ago (and busted my Costa Jose 580Gs trying to grab it) so I guess I'm going to try Ned rigs/shakey heads on casting equipment.  I have a Pflueger Asaro and a 6'4" Team All Star rod I use for river small mouths as it casts light lures pretty good time to try it on finesse.

The zman shroomz 1/20. Just not very durable though if leave the TRD on the hook rusts quickly

I also just received the new Trokar finesse ned head 1/15 and 1/10 size

https://www.cabelas.com/product/Trokar-Pro-V-Finesse-Tungsten-Jighead/2941573.uts?slotId=1

and the new Eagle claw to try out.

Duel purpose the 1/10 size will be for 2.8 Fat Keitech paddletails

Why use baitcast gear for anything?  Just use spinning for everything.

Because it's the better tool for some techniques, just like spinning gear is the better one for other techniques like Ned rigs 😁

should do fine, a trd and a 1/16 oz head weight just a little under a 1/4 oz.  Somewhere around .222 oz.

The stock spool in a PX68 will hold about 110 yards of 20lb power pro 8 Slick.    If you're casting on a full spool and emptying it, that is around 300 -330ft.  Extremely looooooooooong casts.

I'm sure not casting 300'.  The spool on my Pixy is very shallow.  I doubt there's 100 yds of line on it.  Regardless, I nearly spool it when I cast.

A while back (50's and 60's) we were using Bronson and Shakespeare free spool tournament reels filled with 9# braided tournament silk - we fished 1/8oz lures with these reels and t3 sila flex rods.

But when decent mono came out we went to spinning for the light stuff.
