Plano Guide Series vs. Bass Mafia

Recommended Posts

I recently decided to start upgrading some of my 3700 style trays to waterproof ones and want some opinions from the more experienced guys on here about these two styles of waterproof tackle trays.  In my opinion the latches seem nicer on the Plano boxes and they are much cheaper pricewise but I've always thought you get what you pay for in most things so I didn't know if the Bass Mafia coffins are worth the extra cash.  I do think I will look into some of the specialized Bass Mafia storage like the Blade Coffin and maybe the Terminal one as well.  What do you guys think?  Is the price jump worth it or are the less expensive Plano boxes pretty much as good as the standard BM Coffins?

It really all comes down to personal preference. I would go to your local Cabela's or BPS store and check each of them out. I went with the Bass Mafia boxes just because I felt it was easier to get the latches undone than the waterproof Plano boxes. However, I would definitely recommend the terminal coffin by Bass Mafia for all your terminal tackle, that box is hard to beat!

My apologies, I was referring to the bait coffin at $30, not the terminal coffin. I think the bait coffin is hard to beat, but I do agree that the terminal coffin is overpriced.

$30.00 is a little better price, but would still have a hard time dropping that for a box! not knocking anyone if they do though. i've had great luck with flambeau tuff 'tainers with the ze-rust

Yup and that's why it all comes down to personal preference at the end of the day, there's no wrong answer!

Thanks guys.  After looking at both I think I may have some sort of a combination of both brands.  I didn't see any deep waterproof Plano's similar to the deep 3700 that BM offers or anything waterproof for blade style baits like the Blade Coffin.  What would you guys recommend for a waterproof terminal box if you wouldn't spend the cash for the Terminal Coffin?  I've tried smaller like 3600 style boxes but my hooks always get jumbled up since the dividers don't go all the way to the top.

I went with 2 of the Bass Mafia boxes for two reasons:

1. It is waterproof and it floats. I am a kayaker and I flipped last year (my fault....too many adult beverages). My plano box was full of water and I needed to find it at the bottom of the lake. I didn't lose any lures, but most of the hooks began to rust and it ruined the box. The boxes are waterproof and float so if you happen to have it slip, it's no worries.

2. It is crushproof. I also drove over a plano box of spinners a couple years ago...goodbye box and goodbye most of the twisted wires on the baits.

They are HEAVY. I keep my terminal tackle in one and I keep my day box lures in the other. I'm really happy with them and as a younger guy I don't have much problem with the extra weight. Both easily fit in a standard backpack just as all other 3700s do.

Only real problem is their logo is big and right in the middle of the box. I HATE their logo and seems very cheesy. I grabbed a couple fishing stickers (who doesn't have a dozen tackle warehouse stickers lying around???) and plastered right over it.

I've only had them for maybe 3-4 months, but I really like them. They have tons of slots so there is no limit to the arrangement and customization you can make.

Hope this helped.

I superglue magnets in my hook compartments to fix that and eliminate the rattling sound.

I am very happy with the bait coffin for my terminal tackle. 30 bucks is expensive but it truly does a better job for my terminal tackle. I like how small each of the trays are and how many dividers there are. All of my other boxes are either flambeau 3700 or plano waterproof 3700. I like either and usually just grab whichever is cheaper at walmart when I am in there.

The bass mafia terminal coffin is $40 at Academy. I bought two of them earlier this year when they had a 20% sale. I have only hooks in one and only weights in the other. Not to say it isn't still pretty high considering its just plastic and foam blocks. But, I've never been so organized with my terminal tackle. The only downside is the foam blocks take up a lot of room. So, you can't fit nearly as many hooks in a box.

I don't personally have the terminal coffin, but wouldn't another option be to remove the foam boxes in order to store more hooks? I know it would defeat the purpose, but I would imagine it would allow for more hooks to be stored there!

If you need/lose that many hooks in an outing you really need to look at some new LINE....

You can get a set of dividers from bass mafia super cheap and remove some of the foam blocks,  they have great customer service

The Bass Mafia boxes are expensive, but they are very solid and will survive some abuse so you get what you pay for. Myself, I have three 3700s, terminal coffin and a 3700dd.
