How many of you only fish homemade lures?

Recommended Posts

My goal is to make everything I need for fishing. I make hardbaits, jigs, and spinners so far and my own rods so far. But the past year money and limited time gets in the way so my supply is down. Whoever said you would save money making your own lures is dead wrong. The little time I had over this winter was spent building and working on my boat. So I'm ending up having to unfortunately buy some lures to hold me over until next winter when I make baits when it snows. Don't want to spend too much time in my hot garage this summer when my time is better spent on the water.

How about you all?

I fish mostly homemade baits.  I don’t make cranks elaztech or top water.

Ryan, I cherish all of the home made baits I have accumulated over the years and will not use them.

Just don't want to lose the art work and memories of past friendships.

I'm working on cutting back to only using my buddy's hand poured plastics.

I’ve has to retire some of my older or favorite lures as I couldn’t bear to lose them. My 2nd crankbait ever made is all lumpy and looks like it wouldn’t catch a thing but I’ve caught more fish on that than any other I’ve made. I no longer use it.

I use a lot of my own baits, I'm probably about 35% of the time fishing something I've made, which I consider to be pretty good with how many baits I have.

Through the ice, 90% of the time I use baits that I've made.  I tie tungsten bead head ice flies, and sell them online.  As far as bassin' goes, I make my own jigs with the Do-It Poisontail jig mold.  I soon will be making my own chatter baits with that same mold.  I also fish my own big hair jigs occasionally, mostly in the spring before vegetation renders them useless.

I will definitely not be making a foray into pouring plastics, but I've considered it.  I already have too many things going to get into that.

If I'm throwing a jig, any kind of jig or a spinnerbait it will be mine 95% of the time, 5% of the time it will be made by someone else and that means 100% of the time it will be homemade. Also, I prefer the term "custom" made because there are a lot of guys who make stuff out of their garages that could compete with any factory bait in both looks and performance.

I make mine in the basement as there is too much crap in the garage. Wire baits I make most of my own like Smalljaw67 just because I like what I like. Certain things you just have to buy like jerkbaits, as good of a luremaker as I have become I cannot make a tungsten internal weight transfer system jerkbait.

I have a lot of friends who fly fish. Nearly all of them tie their own flies so they all only fish lures they made themselves.
