When would you throw a black Whopper Plopper or Choppo?

Anytime I was on the water during the summer.

It has nothing to do with being black. Topwaters don’t work well in the winter or in cold water. To me, color is not an important part of the decision when choosing a topwater bait. Whopper Ploppers are great no matter which color you choose

Why summer? Is black a seasonal color?

No. Any color, any time in the summer.

If bass are ignoring a noisy topwater, it's probably not because of the color.

I carry a white and black.  Not sure it matters.

In general, I like black most of the time. Especially when I'm fishing frogs over mats/emerged vegetation. The fish see a silhouette more than anything as they're looking up at a bait. And I think black just helps the cause in that regard.

However, when fishing in clear water, and especially if you're using a slower bait like a popper, I think color/patterns can matter. I've seen bass rise up and inspect my topwater baits before they commit to it.

I have not had much luck on the black plopping baits. Low light conditions are about the only time they've done me much good. I'd much rather fish a bone or white colored one.
