With pitching a jig to lay downs. This year I decided to try new things and stay away from my crutch (the Senko). Last weekend nothing was really working for me so I decided to pick up a jig and start pitching to lay downs and other cover. I’ve been practicing pitching for a couple years now, why I never fished it I couldn’t tell you. Last weekend I only caught a couple but it was a blast!

 

This morning 6poundbass and I fished on our lake. We ran right to the spot I started with last weekend and first pitch bam got one. Two pitches later bam another. All in all I caught 7 in about 45 minutes with the biggest going around 3 pounds. Pitching a jig is a blast! I can’t believe I’ve gone all these years and missed out on all this fun! 

My favorite way to catch them, even over topwater.

I pitched all kinds of things before ever trying to use a bass jig -- worms, grubs, tubes, even spinnerbaits (single-spin colorados for the "helicopter effect" on the fall). I didn't even know what I was doing was called "pitching".  When I first started using jigs, I thought, "well, I'll try this for a while, but they'll probably just ignore it"......and then: TAP, TAP!  Lo and behold, they didn't ignore it.

 

Also, sounds like you're having success locating the honey holes in your new lake!

It's such a fun way to fish. And super productive too! It took me a couple years to figure it out, but once I got it...I GOT IT! Sometimes when I know I am in good water but not getting bites on the jig, I'll t-rig a craw of some sort and peg the weight. Hold on tight!

Jogs are my #1 "confidence bait" and I love fishing them, I have managed to hook into more fish with a jig than any other bait. Glad to hear there's another member in the jig enthusiast corner!

Pitching a jig is a lot of fun and I always feel very smart because I just *knew* there would be a bass in that exact hole/piling/branch/whatever, ignoring the other 10 times I got it wrong.

Funny you say this. It does make you feel smart or gives you a ton of confidence.

Yup we are starting to find some honey holes, and finding new ones every time we go out. It’s been a fun productive year so far.

I’m not to the point where I can replace throwing a frog as number one but I’m loving it.

You can doubt me all you want. I never claimed to be the master. Jig fishing takes patience. I have patience. Jig fishing is a quality, not quantity rig, Hence the patience. 

Now you gotta try dragging a jig. Not as gratifying as flipping for some with extreme ADD like me, but it’s effective. But remember, your out there to catch and not just fish.
