I'm looking for a 7' rod mostly for jerkbaits and some top water. I prefer more of a fast/extra fast action for these two applications. I'm really happy with the St. Croix 68 MXF but looking for something longer as I'm fishing out of a 8' pontoon boat. I'm looking to spend $200 - $300. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The Slasher is my next rod however a lot of research has shown the dobyns champion 704cb seems to be widely accepted among all forums as "the jerkbait" rod.

Thanks A-Jay. I've read good reviews on this Rod. I'll do some more research on it. I'm somewhat still set on a 7 footer.

The Champion 704c is on my list. I think this model might be a better fit for me than the 704cb. Thanks for the reply.

I personally find the 7' Kistler MH H3 as a really nice rod to throw jerkbaits on. It's high end weight is even capable of throwing the megabass Kanata a country mile. It's probably the most versatile rod I own and that's saying something. Pair it with an aldebaran and it's unbelievable in your hands.

i owned a st croix 68 mxf jerkbait rod. too fast. i now use, depending on the lure weith, a 704cb in graphite or 705cb in fiberglass. i would not go back to the st croix and it was a legend tournament rod if that says anything

Fantastic. I missed this Rod in my research. Definitely on my list. Thank you.

Thanks for your feedback. How do you find the action on the 704cb(graphite)? Mod. fast or fast?

maybe right between if there was such a thing lol

it is really my favorite rod i own and it has handled all of my biggest fish in an incredible way just playing perfectly no matter what they decide to throw at me (jumps, shakes, whatever)

the action for jerks is a light twitch of the wrist for a small frantic action or more of a pull back for long glides (depending on your bait of course) i can throw it all day it is light, balanced perfectly with a chronarch ci4

if someone stole all my rods and left me with one i would want the 704cb to stay

How tall are you guys? , any rod over 6'6" and I am slapping water, but I am only 5'5". I also like short handles for these rods.

This is actually what I'm looking for. Many thanks jakkbauer.

I'm 6' 3". I need the extra length so the Rod will be past the end of the pontoons.

I did go on their website but I don't think they'll ship to Canada. I did send them email.

Having fished a lot from shore, canoe, bass raider etc I’m used to using short sweeps rather than straight down jerks which makes rod length less of an issue. Also having the extra length is an advantage for distance casting.

I can't say enough good things about the Megabass Levante Jerkbait Special. 6'11, the best action I've ever found for a jerkbait rod. Worth looking into!

The Champion 704C has a split grip vs the full handle on the CB models, if that matters to you....Probably not for a jerkbait specific rod.

I use the Champion 685CB for jerkbaits with straight fluro and it works pretty well for me. If you're 6'6 and dead set on a 7' rod the 704C is pretty stiff with some backbone. I skip with the 704C and straight 65lb braid in FL. I only use dobyns rods and their C blanks vs. CB blanks are completely different.

I think the 703C might be a better fit if you want a faster jerkbait rod or the 704CB for more flex.

I have this rod but have never really used it. It looks very pretty in my room though.

Dobyns champion 704cb here, two of them in fact.  Also a 685cb that I use for topwater walking baits.  Much prefer them to my st croix M/F and MH/M rods that I was using for those techniques before.  Love those croixs as well, but for different applications.  Dobyns champion CB rods are the bees knees and perfectly priced for jerkbait and topwater applications, if you ask me at any rate.

I was going to order this Rod but they have had breakage issues and all the models have been destroyed and will be available late fall. The Orochi XX is top of my list.

Great info. Thank you. The CB sounds more suited for jerks than the c models.

I didn't realize so many guys are using the cb's for Jerkbaits. It's coming down to the Orochi XX and the 704cb. Thanks for your feedback.

The 705CB may be more versatile if you want a multi-purpose rod. I use it for topwaters, lipless, and jerkbaits but I hardly throw lighter plugs. The 704CB should be better for lighter stuff like a jerkbait

That's what I've read as well. I will take it in consideration. Appreciate it.

I went through about 4-5 different jerkbait setups before settling on the Dobyns 704CB in GRAPHITE. The glass one is a little too soft. Had it and sold it.

As others have said, the 705CB works well too, but I prefer that one in graphite as well. Also had/sold the glass model. It's great for jerkbaits over 1/2oz, and it also doubles as an excellent rod for squerebills like the KVD 1.5/2.5 (it's best application), shallow divers like the Rapala DT-6, and topwaters. It'll do well for lipless crankbaits in open water or rocks, but I prefer to toss those on spinnerbait tackle because it works better for ripping it from grass.

Strict jerk bait rod: 704CB graphite. I toss Pointer 100s and deep-diving, three-treble jerkbaits on it every spring and fall. It's not too soft for those.

Is it still available?
