Trolling Motor Steering Cable Too Short

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,
I'm at a total loss on what to do. This Christmas I upgraded to a 55# 45" Motorguide X3 trolling motor. It goes on a 15 ft Alumacraft flat bottom bass boat. The problem is, the bow fishing area is very short, so the pedestal sits only 2.5 feet behind the tip of the boat. This means the trolling motor is next to you, not out in front like most are used to.

The issue: I want to screw the foot pedal to the deck, but the steering cable that attaches the head of the trolling motor to the steering cable is too short. When the motor is stowed, it moves the head too far back and the cable cannot reach the front of the foot pedal without pulling abusively on the wires. I have no idea what to do. I can't imagine not securing the foot pedal to the deck, but the steering cables are simply not long enough to reach the foot pedal due to having it placed so far forward in the boat.

Has anyone ever experienced this, or any suggestions?

Thank you,

Dillon

Hard to picture in my head, but can the shaft be moved down any? If the shaft could slide down, moving it further down in the water, then theoretically it would also be closer to the nose of the boat when stowed. That would shorten the distance of the head of the TM to the pedal. That's about all I can think of off the top of my head without a picture.

When the TM is stowed the head of the unit is behind the front pedistal seat instead of in front of the pedistal post...the cables don't reach up to the bow where the foot control pedal is going to be mounted is how read this.

The TM bracket should be mounted on the front of bow at 45 degree angle, the pedestal about 5' back from the bow, the TM pedal about 3' back from the bow.

You don't have the room for a bracket mounted  pedal controlled TM if the pedestal is only  2' back of the front of the bow.

Is there a way to either move the seat back or build an deck extension to put the seat further back.

Not that I can think of, but very valid ideas, thanks Alex. Tom is spot on with his understanding of the situation, and unfortunately I am facing the reality that I don't think I will be able to secure the pedal to the floor. Looks like I will have to position it every time I deploy the motor

Remove the seat and stand while you fish.

Velcro. One spot for travel and another spot for fishing.

How far back do you need to move the seat back to make it work?

Can you remount the trolling mount on a thick piece of aluminum so it extends a bit more over the bow?

Fwiw...

A curved seat post will gain you 5".  $39.95

I've used one on my 1648 grizzly for 6 years and I weigh 220. The cable on the Maxxum 70 was just short enough to keep my knee at a 90 degree angle all day - almost all day until the cramping started. Now it's comfortable and the curved post makes the bow seem 5" wider too when fishing over the side.

Attwood makes a 6" offset adapter that goes between the top of the post and the seat. I've never used one.

I agree, some pics would help.

Why bolt down the pedal? Just slide it wherever it "has" to be. (my pedal is free . com)
