When to use a snell knot?

Featured Replies

Is the snell thought of as a knot you only really use on a straight shank hook with flippin/pitchin? Would you use it with a straight shank hook with a worm or creature? Never used one before but I understand some people swear by them, saying they rotate the hook point into the fishes moth better or something? I'm just trying to figure out if I should learn it and start using this knot with some presentations or not?

Most often used with the straight shank hook and, specifically braid.

I snelled my straight shank hooks for a season or two and then switched back to a palomar. Personally I'm skeptical of the whole hook "kicking up" thing. I mean sure it looks neat when you do it in your hands but does it really work like that in a fishes mouth and even if it does would it make a difference?

I don't have any problem hooking fish with a palomar. If anything, I feel better about tying directly to the eye as was intended.  Learning proper hook setting technique and using the right gear for the job will do more for your hook up ratio than any hocus pocus knot tricks will ever do.

I've never used a snell, haven't seen the need for it.

Back in the 70s & 80s, I often used a snell knot for saltwater fishing (Tied 'ALL' my own rigs).

Since that time however, I don't see myself tying anymore snell knots (Been there, done that).
