Homer Circle Hookset Technique

Featured Replies

I was reading a Homer Circle book today and got to a section where he talked about hooksets and explained that the best way to set the hook is as follows

"With your left hand on the foregrip and your right hand on the butt, quickly pull toward you with the left hand and push away with the right"

I tried it a couple of times playing around with a rod and it seems this method does indeed give you far greater speed than you could otherwise achieve so I was wondering if anyone here actually uses or has tried this type of hookset.

I've never read about Uncle Homer's hookset,

but that pretty much describes what I've been doing for years.

Lot's of power with little effort.

Hook set is not nearly as important as it was back when Homer was fishing.  Today's hooks are so sharp, they nearly set themselves.  Back then, we had to stretch our arms out in order to drive the hook home.   My wife loves to tell the story of when I pulled the front bass seat out of the deck twice in one morning when setting the hook on a fish.  ☺️

It's called the whip or snap set, good way to break off a big bass.

When properly performed, this hook-set involves a gentle push-pull movement.

There is no whipping, snapping, eye-crossing or jaw-breaking, and that's the best part.

No matter what hookset is used, anyone breaking off big bass has much bigger issues.

Thats funny . The video where I seen uncle  Homer Circle fishing , hes holding the rod by the end of the handle . not the foregrip . The worse place possible to get a good hook-set . The video was Bigmouth Forever by Glen Lau .

I do the exact opposite when I cast (top hand pushed forward, bottom hand back). It's necessary when casting from the bank with a lot of nearby trees. No backswing required.

I don't let go of the reel handle when I hookset. Maybe I should, but I also haven't caught many big fish yet - I don't often need a big hookset. I think.

I also may be doing it wrong :)

Bear in mind....Homer's rods were likely all pistol grip models.
