Fishing Log example

Featured Replies

Sharing a fishing log I have been refining for 25+ years.

Got the idea from a friend who grew up in Wisconsin...her Dad had been logging his fishing trips for 60+ years. Further refined when fishing the Silver Water Wheel Lodge (Canada) for walleye in the 2000's.

Fun to go back and read the logs, relive good (and bad) fishing days, and remember the great times on the water.

This is just the top 1/2...it's printed on standard 8-1/2"x11" paper. I three-hole punch and keep in a binder in my office.

Enjoy.  Daubs

Seems strikingly similar to my fishing log that I created in 1991, and first posted back in 1996.  Except mine has more details.

Outstanding! Thanks!

I wish I would have used Excel, or some other spread sheet software to do my record-keeping. If you're young starting out, that is the way to go. Otherwise, it's more difficult to learn from the records. Not impossible, just more difficult. Excel can make it much easier to analyze.

Agreed!

The Canada lodge we fished keeps records on paper...then transfer to Excel every night.

That's a good log.

I would however, give more recognition to presentation with respect to 'speed', and precisely how the lure was delivered.

That is to say, the relative cranking speed, was the retrieve nonstop or stop & go,

did the cadence involve intermittent pauses, and if so, what was the mean pause duration in seconds.

Mine has similar categories.  I keep mine in Excel that way I can do filters and extract the information that I want and get it in a report.

My logs are narrative in style, but always include the following:

Time I launched

Temp forecast for the day

Current wind direction and forecast

Time of high tide

Time of low tide

Current temp and pressure

Water temp

Water condition

Condition of grass

Baits I used

Baits bass caught on

Number of bass caught

Where I fished

Time I quit

I video my trips so I can see exactly how I caught every fish ;) I don't use the videos for that purpose really, it's just the only log I have.
