No question, there will be new jerkbaits purchased this winter... always have been.  Several new ones on a list already.  Question I have today is should the LC Pointer 65 be on that list.  Pointer 78 has been a productive bait for me, but that's been as small as I've carried in the Pointers.  I wondering if I should call "good enough" with the 78s or am I missing the 65s...

The 65 gets a TON of bites...As you'd expect a lot of smaller fish but you'll get quality ones too.  I typically use it in places where I expect to catch smallmouth or spotted bass and most often in the fall.  Hardest part is casting distance, I use a spinning rod and 6lb flouro to keep my casts reaching normal distances - So when you do get a decent fish it gets pretty fun with those tiny hooks and light line....Have a landing net handy .  

In the spring, for prespawn smallmouth, I have a Pointer 65 on one of my rods at all times. The lake I fish has a lot of small minnows that the 65 mimics pretty well. I’ll bet in the last 6 or 7 years, I’ve gotten a thousand smallmouth along with walleyes on it including this 28 incher.

 

I've got about a dozen 65's in my jerkbait box. It's a great little bait that catches fish of all sizes and species. I've never thrown it at smallmouth that I can think of but it's caught me countless largemouth, crappie, trout, and white bass.

It definitely gets bit, but I get frustrated that I have very low ratio of landing fish with it. TBH, I am just not very good with keeping bass on any small hooks, I guess.  But setting the hook and keeping them pinned with 65 is a real challenge for me.

Word on the street is there are a few pointer lots coming up for sale in the flea market in the near future. Knowing the seller they’ll be cheap and have upgraded hooks.

That's odd, I lose very few on the 65. I've got them all set with upgraded Owner ST36 #8 trebles, fishing it on a 6' 8" M/F spinning rod and 8lb mono (although the rod feels more M/MF to me). A fish just looks at that bait funny and it's stuck and those little trebles dig and don't let go.

They have caught more fish than any other jerkbait I own. Retired 2 in baitfish silver so far from catching so many.
