How do minnows replenish so quickly in small creeks and streams?

Featured Replies

I have a creek no more than a few inches deep near me with a couple of deep (1-3 ft) holes that I have been able to toss minnow traps in overnight and pull them out full of creek chubs for most of the summer. How do they replenish so quickly, are they washed downstream every time it rains and then trapped in the holes when the water goes back down or do they swim up/downstream and get stuck or can no longer go any further upstream?

There are probably thousands per mile in the creek and I suspect

you only trap a few dozen at a time. For perspective, striper eat

their weight in shad every week. So, if you have 10,000 fish with

an average weight of 10 lbs, that's 100,000 lbs per week, 52

weeks a year.

If my example represents just Pickwick, losing 5.2 million pounds

of bait fish has virtually no impact on the ecosystem.  Right now

there is no room for water!

From the EPA regarding Fathead Minnows (Pimephales promlas) which I assume are fairly similar in reproduction habits:

"Females release an average of 100 – 200 eggs per spawn, with larger females releasing 200 – 400
eggs. Fathead minnows spawn approximately every 4 – 5 days, but can spawn as often as every
2 days."

Don't worry too much. With that many kids you'd be hopelessly in debt after a week. ?

Father’s Day is a mysterious confusing day in that creek..
