Okay, so I'm looking into a small manual downrigger like a Cannon EasiTroll. I've never operated a downrigger in my life so wondered what a good beginner rod and reel would be? The downrigger I'm looking at is used for about $125 so i don't want to go spending another $200 on a rod and reel. The depths I'll be trolling would rarely approach 100ft. and most likely between 25 - 60ft. I'm after bass but if I can get some laker's I wouldn't mind either.

You want a limber fibreglass rod with a handle that's compatible with your rod holder (not a trigger grip).  Daiwa Wilderness rods are decent enough and very cheap; something around 8' M or ML power should work. Not sure if they're still available?  

 

As for a reel, you can just use a bass reel with mono if it has sufficient line capacity. Line counter is not necessary.

I am not very knowledgeable with down riggers. Used then before with standard tackle, nothing special. The weight has a snap release device you set the force you want it to release the line.

Experts use line counter reels to know exactly how far back the lure is. The rigger has markers on the cable for depth and usually a built in rod holder. 

Trolling speed is important that you need to know. Sonar lets you know if structure is shallower then the weight is set to make adjustments. 

I don’t think you need dedicated rod and reels.

A long moderate action MH power rod with a long handle with a levelwind round reel with a clicker and maybe 30-50 lb braid with a 30 lb mono leader. Ugly Stiks work well (or a custom $600 rod...)
