Marker Buoys

Featured Replies

Looking to get some buoys. Have yall had any luck with a particular brand?

It's not like you are buying a rod.

I would just go out and buy the cheapest one or make your own.

Here's something I do with mine, no matter what kind you get.  Paint at least one of them black!  This way when you aren't the only one on the lake it's a little harder for other boats to pick up the black color vs. orange or green! It works, trust me!

My boat came with about 20 of those things but i don't know the brand! I would say a Wal-Mart one would be just fine!

I made some out of half liter spring water bottles.  A bit of bright paint slopped around the inside, so it won't scrub off, some twine, and a sinker for each.

Storing the twine was a pain.  Wrap it around the bottle, and it sometimes sloughs off, making spaghetti.

I finally got tired of that, and spent a few bucks on the "H" shaped plastic floats that come two to a pack for six or seven bucks per pack.  An inch wide, 1/16th thick strip of lead about six or seven inches long, that is easy to flex around the line coiled on the crossbar of the H, keeps the line in place.

Easy to use.  Peel the lead weight off the crossbar, and toss it in.  With the H shape, the lead pulls off only as much line as it needs to reach the bottom.

If you need stealth, spray them flat black or color of your choosing.

When you haul them in, wrap the line, bend the lead around the crossbar, and done.

Easy to use, easy to store.  What more could you ask for?

Do you like to night fish? Here's how I make lighted bouys for night fishing. Take empty 1 gallon water bottles. Drill a hole in the cap just large enough to pass a 1/4 inch by 2 inch stainless steel eye bolt through it. Use 2 stainless fender washers almost as big as the cap, one inside cap, one outside, and add an empty fishing line spool to the assembly, on the outside of the cap.Add the nut and screw it together using silicone as a sealant to prevent leakage. Wrap nylon surveyors line around the line spool, then add a 2 ounce weight. Before you toss out bouy, snap a light stick and place it in the bottle, then screw on lid and toss out your bouy. The whole bottle will glow from the light stick. When I catfish at night, I mark 3 spots before dark and return to them through the night. Light sticks last @ 8 hours.     Happy fishing.

Thats a good Idea!! I always have a duck decoy on board for the same reason.

This is the style I use: click me.

If I'm marking spots for a tournament I use water bottles. I know I'm not supposed to leave them out, but I do overhight and then retreive them as I cover them the next day. Used to work great, but now a lot of guys come off pad whenever they see one and check it out. Lots of people doing it.
