Are Chatterbaits top water?

Are Chatterbaits top water? I don’t think they are but I just want to make sure

Not in my usage - chatters are worked like swim jigs...below the surface but above the bottom.

I suppose if you reel them super fast......

But no, that's not their intended purpose.

The SK rage blade excels at this. The design seems to give it more lift than other chatter baits, allowing you to wake it at slower speeds.

Green Pumpkin or Black and Blue with a paddle tail trailer waked over nearly topped off grass in late spring/early summer has produced some nice fish for me.

The answer is no. Once the blade hits the surface the entire bait rolls the over. I suppose with a 1/4 oz and a good kicking trailer like a rage craw you can get it in the 1’ deep area though.

Like that you’re thinking outside the box though. That’s what makes a good fisherman. Willingness to experiment with baits.?

You can fish them on top like a spinnerbait, but no, they aren't "topwater"

Great thing about Chatterbaits is they are so versatile. You can use them as an buzzbait/spinnerbait. You can use them like a swim jig, even on non- grassy areas, like a pitching jig and hop them along the bottom just fast enough to keep the metal paddle going back and forth.

Buzz baits are top water, Chattter baits are not.
