Okuma Celilo - tip broke/snapped brand new

Featured Replies

Hello guys. I just ordered a brand new Okuma Celilo 5'6 UL from Sportsman. Picked it up last night and was setting up my new rig then for whatever reason, the tip snapped and broke. A little pressure there but is this rod just so brittle that it snaps just like that? This is brand new... I already called up the store and they can do a refund and I can order a new one. But now I am quite hesitant to order the same rod... Anyone else has any feedback on Okuma celilo rod tips? Thanks.

I have had the 2 piece 6' UL for about 8 years. Never had a problem. I have caught many trout and even some 1-2 lb bass on the this rod. Great rod for $30.

Maybe you got a bad one?

I wish that's exactly the cause... I've read good things about this rod that's why I bought it only to snap on me while setting it up and haven't even casted it.

Can you explain what you mean by snapped while setting it up? What were you doing?

It's a composite rod (fiberglass and graphite) so I wouldn't say it's brittle. This rod has a lot of give in it. It's very moderate action.

I guess someone waved it around in the air pretending it was a sword hitting all sorts of racks and things in the store before you bought it.

I was putting line and testing the action. The blank was in bent position and the tip part just snapped. I just looked at the blank tip that broke and see the inside is hollow. I wonder if that's the culprit... and I think if you go ahead and try to bend this thing with your hands, it will just break easily...?

I own another rod, a St Croix one, and that one takes up a lot of beating but very durable.

All modern rods are hollow, aren't they?

Sorry to hear this. Someone probably damaged the rod before you bought this or it got damaged in transit. I have the 7’ version and this is one of my favorite rods.

I hope you contact them. They should take care of you.

This is an excellent rod for its price and I’ve had mine for over 10 years.

You have to be careful bending rods by hand.  It's OK to pull on the tip to bend it IF you are holding onto the handle ONLY. But if you pull on the tip and you are holding the rod in the other hand not on the handle...they can snap like a twig. The closer to the tip that you are holding the quicker it will snap.

Most rod tips are hollow. I do have a few solid tip rods, but they are kind of special purpose and are even easier to break.

I pushed my rod into the ceiling fan twice tonight (accident!) while respooling. Some old Cabela's rod my Dad gave me. Not a problem! "WHACK WHACK WHACK...son of a...oh whew!"
