I was looking for some opinions on small outboards (4-5hp). What is the best company to go with without having to break the bank? I'm looking to spend no more than $1200. I've done a little bit of research online, but haven't really been able to decide what would be the best company to go with.

I'm of the opinion that it's hard to go wrong with Yamaha, Tahatsu, Mercury, Honda and perhaps a few more. My research led me to get a Honda 20hp 4 stroke. Like you, the research was conducted by asking mechanics, experienced boaters, etc. This forum will help you decide, as we have lots of experience on this subject. Part of what set my mind on Honda was it's warranty. Good luck!

I would go used if I were you...  I have seen 5hp outboards for 400-600 bucks.
