Salmon & Steelhead Rod

Featured Replies

I own a St Croix Triumph Salmon & Steelhead spinning rod that is 8.6ft heavy fast (12-25lb, 1/2-2oz). I paired it with a Lew’s Mach crush 400 spinning reel. Is this setup strong enough for ocean fishing from the shore, muskie fishing, or even striper fishing? Just wanted to see how versatile this setup is, and I don’t want to damage my rod if it’s not suited for these fish. Thanks!

The reel may be on the light side being that you are surf fishing. From a boat, it would be plenty. I use a 3000 series reel from a boat which some may consider light but they’re higher ends reels with good drag.

The rod sounds like the right action but you’re probably going to want something a little longer at the end of the day so to speak for longer casts.

I do not surf fish much as I usually fish from a boat but I do have a Tsunami 10’ MHF rod and a 5000 Penn reel that I use when I do. Would I be afraid to use your setup, not at all but a 40”+ striper will give you a run for your money. You’re not just fighting the fish, you’re also fighting the surf.

No experience with that particular rod but typically Salmon rods are more parabolic and that isn't something I would want if I'm sticking a rod in a beach spike.

I'll be the guy who stands up for the rig - take it fishing.

I've been spooled by bull reds, and that's part of the fun.  I took my 7-1/2' MH inshore rod to the surf forever. Even fished 2-oz spider weights with it, but now I'm geared for that with a heavier surf rod.

I wouldn't hesitate to take my Lami Rogue River Special to the surf for lures, and Tyler, who owns corpusfishing website and forum, has one just for lures in the surf.

I've caught king mackerel near offshore and stripers in hard river current on 7-wt fly rod with 12-lb tippet, and was never out-classed with 200 yds backing.

Also king mackerel on Loomis GL2 steelhead MH spinning rod and 12-lb fluoro, though high drag set with them did finish off my Penn 4400SS.

Good for surf when tossing lighter lures.  I have several lighter than that that I use with confidence.   Reds, trout,  blues, Spanish mackerel,  all good.
