Is anyone using them?  Thoughts?  

 

Looks like Loomis has offered them, but outside of custom builds are any other manufactures using them?

 

Seem like a good idea, but feedback I have seen wasn't great...

I think St Croix used/uses them. I use them on float rods that have constant line going in and out with no issues. They are super light and tough. They can make a harmonic buzz with course braid running through. 

I have them on a couple of my St. Croix rage rods and I have no complaints.

I think I could deal with that.  I remember how noisy braid was when I first started using it.  Now I don't even hear it.  

I have several rods with them.  The first one was my favorite... A G. Loomis 803C GLX JWR.  It was the original.  I broke it in a car window. I used Loomis's Xpeditor Service and was sent a new updated version without the Recoil Guides. It was sort of a step down.  The Recoil Guides made the rod perfect.  Not sure how but I could definitely tell the difference between the two. Overall, I like them.  I don't understand why people seem to think there is something wrong or bad about them.

That's the same impression I got.  Now I'm trying to figure out why they aren't more popular ??‍♂️

I think at one time people thought they were soft and braid would cut into them.  My guess it was someone using 50+lb braid with the drag locked down and tried to winch out a lure.  This would cut into just about any guide or break the rod in the process.  I have used braid with them and never had an issue.

Modern braid and modern guides play well together. It’s never been actual braid that damaged guides but the gritty contamination. 

Never owned a rod with them, but when I first saw them on a GLX in Bass Pro, I was in love. Thats was back when I had a wife and a toddler and those were not in my budget, LOL.

I have two G. Loomis spinning rods that have all recoil guides (except the tip top). WPJR GLX 821s and 822s. They are super light and virtually indestructible. I use braid on both rods and haven’t noticed excessive noise. There’s also no wear from braid.

JLM Signature rods from bass pro used to have them.   I still have a few in my stash.  13 fishing I think made some for a while as well.  I think cost was a factor in doing away with them.  

The first gen 13 Fishing Envy series, Black or Green, is equipped with recoil guides as well. Mine have no problem for leader knots or anything.

I don't have a problem with that at all.  I do a lot of line washing (I call it fishing).

I had one and I loved it. Had less noise with braid than standard guides did. I am surprised more rods don't have them. I fish 50;lb Sufix 832 and never grooved a guide . I am one of those drag locked down guys also. I wish they made recoil micro guides.

They do. You can get them smaller than you’ve ever seen

I built a fair few fly rods with recoil guides when they first came out. Still have a Dan Craft 9’ 5wt with them and it’s one of the most responsive rods I’ve ever cast. I’ve not done a casting/spinning rod with them, but it would be a hard choice between them and titanium SiC tiny guides if I wanted a super light high performance rod.

I liked them in the guide service because inexperienced clients were always stepping on rods when they were fighting a fish.  The recoil guides had no inserts to break out.

Great point.  That's always a fear when I get on someones boat.  Pretty sure I would offer to replace the rod of I did that.  Always find it funny when I get a guide and they start me out with the beater gear, and after a little bit of feeling me out, the rod locker opens up and the good stuff starts showing up on the deck ?
